RECAP: Frantz Tosses Gem As Bulldogs Split GLVC Opener With William Jewell

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

LIBERTY, Mo. - The Bulldogs fell behind early and overcame late to begin their conference schedule on Saturday. They traveled to Liberty, Missouri, to play the first two games of a four-game series against William Jewell College.

After winning back-to-back games, the Bulldogs lost game one 11-3 after being forced to play catch-up allowing five first-inning runs — the most they've allowed this season in the initial frame. Game two took a different and positive turn for the Bulldogs. Kent Frantz won his 16th career game tying Alex Hoffman for the most wins in program history. Frantz also moved into 8th all-time in strikeouts passing Jeff Birdsong.

In game one, Bryan Clark was looking to bounce back from his last outing against Saginaw Valley State University here he lasted a season-low 3 innings and allowed 4 earned runs.

The first five Cardinals reached base in the first inning including the four- and five-hole hitters Chase Reddick and Trent Bollman both reaching via RBI hits. The duo would go a combined 4-for-9 driving in seven runs for the game. Brian Edell caught a runner trying to steal second ending the inning.

William Jewell starter Brendan Beatty kept Truman at bay with seven innings of two-run ball. The Bulldogs had a chance to score some first-innings runs of their own after Brendan Trimble hit a two-out double. The next two batters would single including
Charlie Kreh's hit to score Trimble. Beatty was able to defuse the situation with a fielder's choice.

The Bulldogs would not strike again until the sixth inning. Evan Kayser doubled to centerfield to score Charlie Kreh, but the Bulldogs were trailing by five runs after the Cardinals knocked Clark out of the game in the fifth. Redick and Bollman were at the center of the attack once again with Redick walking and Bollman driving in another. Clark would record one out before he was pulled for Ben Fugitt who allowed a sacrifice fly before getting the third out.

Fugitt would avoid trouble until the eighth when his hit by pitch, wild pitch and two walks would turn into four more Cardinal runs. Tanner Forck took over from there until the end of game.

Offense was hard to come by for both teams in game two. Kent Frantz was locked in a pitcher's duel with William Jewell starter Jace Burdette. Frantz would outlast Burdette and pitch his first complete game and shutout of the season.

The senior from Bloomington, Illinois, did not encounter much resistance during the day scattering four hits. Frantz didn't allow a single runner to reach base in four of the seven innings he pitched. The most trouble he dealt with was in the second inning after walking the leadoff batter Redick. He would allow a single two batters later, but the Bulldog defense came up big when Kayser was able to corral the ball and throw out Redick at third.

Career-win No. 16 was a possibility, but not a guarantee as the game was scoreless entering the seventh inning. After mustering one hit through the first six innings, the Bulldogs were able get a couple led by Jack Goodwin's pinch-hit leadoff double down the right-field line. Jon Lyons would answer with a double of his own down the left-field line to score Goodwin. After Mason King was hit by a pitch, the Cardinals defense would collapse with Josh Abegg hitting. Errors were committed by the third baseman and shortstop allowing the unearned run in Lyons to score. This gave Frantz the cushion he needed before retiring the side in the bottom half to end the game.

The series will resume with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
