RECAP: Two Rallies Come Up Short In Doubleheader Loss To Cardinals

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

LIBERTY, Mo. – Two comebacks, one of historic proportions, came up just short in a doubleheader loss to William Jewell on Sunday. The Bulldog Baseball team fell 4-3 in the opener and lost 13-12 in 13 innings in the series finale.

Game one saw Truman fall behind 4-0 after the first inning and have to fight back. The Cardinals had all four of their hits in the game come in the first inning as Rian Markes allowed just four more base runners the entire game.

Truman scratched home a run in the fourth but left the bases loaded on a called third strike.

In the seventh, Adam Stolley led off with a single. With two outs, Charlie Kreh got an RBI single to right and Jack Goodwin followed with a run scoring single to cut the lead to one. Evan Kayser rolled into a fielder's choice to end the game with pinch runner Brendan Kelly at third base.

The second game started like the first with Truman trailing by four after one. Goodwin got an RBI single to left to score Mason King for a 1-0 lead but Jewell countered with five runs on four hits in their half of the inning.

Truman tried to play catch up again but found themselves trailing 11-4 heading into the top of the ninth inning. Brendan Trimble reached on an error to start the frame and Kreh reached on another error that scored Trimble. Goodwin singled up the middle. Kory Carter knocked in Kreh on a sac fly to make it 11-6.

Adam Stolley flew out for the second out.

Dan Ampleman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mason King fell behind 1-2 on the count but watched three balls and drew the walk for an RBI. After a pitching change, Josh Abegg hit a ball to third that was booted that allowed another run to score. A fifth error in the inning cleared the bases and Truman had tied the game at 11.

Neither team threatened until the Cardinals in the 12th. A lead-off single off of Peter Young and a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out. Young got a shallow fly ball to center that didn't allow the runner to try and score for the second out then got a fly out to left to get out of the jam unscathed.

Carter immediately doubled to lead off the 13th and scored on a ninth error of the game by the Cardinals on a bunt by Adam Stolley. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out but a fielder's choice got Stolley forced out at the plate and a strikeout ended the half inning with Truman just getting the one run.

Tanner Forck was called upon to close things down but gave up a leadoff double. The next batter was hit and after a sacrifice bunt an RBI single up the middle scored both runners to end the game in favor of the Cardinals 13-12.

It was the third longest game in Bulldog history, trailing a 15-inning game against Lincoln in 2009 and a 14-inning affair against Quincy in 2014.

For the weekend, Kreh and Goodwin each drove in three runs apiece but Truman managed a .194 batting average as a team in the four games. Kent Frantz, Matt Tometz and Rian Markes allowed only one earned run between the three of them in a combine 18 innings of work.

Truman will host Drury University next Friday and Saturday starting at noon both days.
