RECAP: Bulldogs Suffer Pair Of Tough Losses To Open Holiday Weekend

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Baseball team dropped a pair of games to Drury on Friday to open up their Great Lakes Valley Conference series. The Panthers defeated the Bulldogs 9-2 in the opener and 2-1 in extra innings to take the nightcap.

In game one, Drury scored their first four runs of the game all with two outs. An RBI single by nine-hole hitter Caleb Essick gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the second. Essick struck again in the fourth with an RBI double with two outs and Brant Schaffitzel and Ethan Owens followed with runs scoring hits to stake the Panthers up 4-0.

The Bulldogs put two on with one out in the sixth and after a double steal on an attempted hit-and-run, Josh Abegg grounded out to score Jon Lyons.

The Panthers got the run and then some back in the seventh when Brandt Ollinger shot a ball back up the box to plate two more runs. Ryan Kayhill topped off the game with a three-run homer to left in the eighth.

Austin Simms struck out seven and allowed four hits in eight innings to pick up the win for Drury. Bryan Clark suffered the loss, going six innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. Brendan Trimble had a pair of hits for Truman and an RBI.

Kent Frantz was looking to become Truman's all-time pitching wins leader in game two. The Bulldogs struck first in the third when Jake Schneider hit a one-out infield single then went to second on a wild pitch. Adam Stolley singled to shallow right field and the Bulldogs had first and third with one out. Stolley drew a wild throw from pitcher Tom Tewes that scored Schneider for the 1-0 lead. Following a walk and a fly out to center, the Bulldogs left a pair on when Trimble grounded out to the pitcher.

Frantz was able to work out of a jam in the fifth. A pair of two-out errors had runners at second and third but a backhand stop deep in the hole and throw by Dan Ampleman retired Brant Schaffitzel.

The Bulldogs had two on with two out in their half of the fifth but another nifty play by a shortstop, this time Ethan Owens of the Panthers, got Drury out of the inning as he was able to get Mason King out at second after going behind the second base bag to field the ball hit up the middle by Abegg.

In the sixth, Clayton Engel sliced a one-out double down the left field line and was able to tie the game scoring all the way from second on a wild pitch. The ball was in the dirt and shot away from the Truman catcher to allow Engel to race home with the tying run.

The Bulldogs looked to get the run back in their sixth. With two outs, Jack Goodwin was able to steal second after a pick-off attempt and Ampleman drew a five-pitch walk. Pinch hitter Jon Lyons beat out an infield single to deep short to load the bases but Schneider fouled out to end the threat.

Frantz preserved the tie in the seventh after snaring a comebacker and throwing out a runner at the plate then struck out Schaffitzel to end the inning.

Luck ran out in the eighth. A lead-off walk and sacrifice put the go ahead run in scoring position. The runner moved up on a shallow single to center and scored on a sac fly liner by Ryan Kayhill.

Truman put their leadoff runner on with a walk but following a pitching change, a caught stealing followed by a strikeout and ground out ended the game.

Ryan Wedermyer was the winner in relief, going two innings and allowing two hits and a walk. Nick Costantino notched his third save. Frantz went the distance for the 'Dogs surrendering six hits and striking out five.
