RECAP: Drury Finishes Off Weekend Sweep Over Truman Baseball

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Bulldog Baseball team was on the wrong end of two vastly different games on Saturday afternoon against the Drury Panthers at the Truman Baseball Park. The Bulldogs fell 3-2 in a crisp opener but then lost 19-10 in a marathon.

Drury swept the four-game series with two victories coming by one run.

In Saturday's opener, the Panthers scored first in the second. They put their first two hitters on base before Brandt Ollinger hit an opposite field two-run single to right.

The Bulldogs got a run back in the third when Brian Edell lofted a high fly to left field. Caleb Essick went to the fence and leaped but the ball had enough juice to get over for his first collegiate home run.

Drury got an insurance run in the sixth when a walk was issued to Ollinger and he was moved up on a sac bunt. Drew Newsom shot a ball up the middle that was stopped by Dan Ampleman but an ill-advised throw to first went wild allowing Ollinger to trot in for the 3-1 lead.

Truman tired for some late game heroics. Evan Kayser hit a pinch hit home run to left to cut the lead to 3-2 with one out and after a single but Edell brought in another pinch hitter in Josh Abegg. Pinch runner Brendan Kelly was thrown out trying to steal second after Nick Costantino came into the game for the Panthers and Abegg grounded out to end the game.

Rian Markes was followed by Matthew Wade and Matt Tometz to the hill. Tometz picked off two Drury baserunners in his inning-plus of work. Avery Jennings was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts in six and a third innings pitched.

Game two saw the Bulldogs having to play catch up. A three-run homer by Ryan Kayhill in the first and a three-run second saw Truman fall behind 6-0.

The Bulldogs battled back in their third. Singles by Brendan Trimble and a two-run single by Charlie Kreh cut the deficit in half.

The Panthers got those runs back in their next at bat when Clayton Engel hit the line in right for a two-run double. Ollinger picked up a two-out RBI with an infield single for a 9-3 lead.

Truman scored two in the fourth on a single by Mason King and double by Brendan Trimble and brought the tying run to the plate with one-out. However, the Panthers turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

Drury added a run in the fifth and two in the seventh to go up 12-5.

Zach Spencer launched his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the seventh to trim the lead back down to five with a two-run shot to left.

However the dam broke in the eighth when Drury plated five runs and added two more in the ninth.

Both Truman and Drury had 15 hits in the finale but the Bulldogs committed six errors.

The paths from the bullpen to the mound were nearly worn out as Drury used five hurlers with Spencer Witherspoon getting the win while Truman used seven pitchers with Josh Woodmansee taking the loss in the three and a half hour game.
