RECAP: Bulldogs Take Series Opener Against Quincy

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Bulldogs began the third leg of their 12-game stretch of games against the West division's top-3 teams when they hosted Quincy today at Bulldog Baseball Park. They would split the home portion of the series.

They were initially scheduled to host the Hawks Sunday after playing at their place Saturday, but weather concerns moved up the Kirksville games to today. The Bulldog offense still came out firing in game one scoring 10 runs — one less run than they scored in the last four games against Maryville — winning 10-4. It cooled off in game two losing 8-2.

Quincy pitchers came into Friday as one of the top two staffs in the GLVC. Prior to game one, the Hawks' hurlers had a 3.43 ERA and a .246 batting average against. Only the Illinois-Springfield staff can bring better numbers to the mound and are the only other one to have a team ERA under 4.00 and a team batting average against under .250.

Aaron Stone led Quincy's rotation with a 2.94 ERA until the third inning. Stone went into the frame having retired the first six Bulldogs only for Dan Ampleman to hit a home run. This would prove to disrupt his rhythm as he then allowed singles to Jake Schneider and Mason King, setting up the hot bat of Charlie Kreh.
Kreh was coming off a seven-game hitting streak and a four RBI performance against Maryville. He would go on to match that total starting with his two-run double to left center.

Evan Kayser came around to score three separate times after hitting safely. The first occurrence came in the fourth when he scored on Schneider's sacrifice fly going from first to third on Ampleman's single.

Kent Frantz maintained a groove for the first five innings allowing only four base runners. Entering into this afternoon, he had four straight starts where he went at least seven innings and allowed no more than three earned runs. Frantz has frustrated GLVC opponents in three of those starts boasting a pristine 1.64 conference ERA.

Frantz encountered trouble in the sixth when he allowed a leadoff home run to Cody Birdsong, but his offense had his back in the bottom of that inning and the following two innings. Kayser drove himself in with a two-run home run in the sixth, Kreh picked up his other two RBIs in the seventh and Kayser circled the bases after his leadoff hit before three Bulldog stolen bases led to an unearned run.

Matt Tometz relieved after Frantz's seven innings and three earned runs and didn't allow another one to cross the last two innings.

The Bulldog offense and starting pitching would not carry over into game two. Rian Markes was looking to bounce back from a seven-run outing against Maryville. Birdsong made it hard for Markes to settle in with a double in the first inning that led to a run driven in by Troy Wehde.

The Bulldog offense appeared ready to match Quincy run-for-run in the second inning after Brian Edell drove in fellow freshman Zach Spencer to tie the game.

The third inning would be a busy inning for the second time of the day, not for the Bulldogs but for the Hawks. Brynn Martinez led off the inning with a single setting up Birdsong for a two-run home run. Birdsong would go a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs. A walk to Wehde would turn into another run making it 4-1 Hawks.

Kreh tried to make something happen in the bottom frame with a one-out double and after advancing to third on a wild pitch. Spencer would ground out to end the inning and the Bulldog threat.

The Hawks took advantage in the fourth with two singles to start the inning. They would both come around to score after a Martinez sacrifice fly and another Birdsong RBI to make it 6-1.

The Bulldogs were able to score an unearned run for the second time of the day after Kreh scored on a passed ball in the fifth inning. Kayser made it to the third, but was stranded. Kreh had another opportunity to bring the Bulldogs back in the game with runners on second and third in the sixth, but grounded out to the end the inning. Kreh finished 2-3 for the game and 4-7 for the day.

Markes would allow one more run in the sixth, but finished his outing with six innings under his belt. Ben Fugitt pitched a perfect last inning before the Bulldogs were retired in the bottom half to end the game.

The Bulldogs will look for its first conference series win tomorrow as the series moves to Quincy with the doubleheader starting at noon.
