SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Truman State University volleyball team continues to impress early on in 2018 while reaching further and further into the program's record book. After two more wins on Saturday in day two of the Westminster Invitational to make it six in a row, the Bulldogs are off to a 7-1 start for the first time since 2010. The Purple and White defeated the host Griffins in four sets before their fourth sweep of the fall in the nightcap against Lubbock Christian.
In the first match of the day vs. Westminster, Truman was led by
Holly Hildebrand (11 kills and four blocks),
Savvy Hughes (five service aces and 50 assists) and
Sam Yancy (17 digs). The Bulldogs hit a red-hot .277 to just .175 by the Griffins including marks of .464 and .375 in the first two sets, respectively.
In the first set, Truman had no problem settling in with six of the first eight points and 10 of the initial 13. From there until the end of the set, Westminster was never closer than four (13-9) and the Bulldogs pushed their advantage to as many as nine (21-12 and 25-16). In the second period, the Griffins took their first leads of the match at both 3-2 and 4-3 before six ties and some back-and-forth play followed. After the final deadlock of 11-11, Truman outscored Westminster by a slim margin of four, 14-10, to hold on for the 2-0 match lead.
In a thrilling third set that took 54 points to decide, the Griffins won it 28-26 to cut the match deficit to 2-1. However, the Bulldogs weren't going to let the match get away and their winning streak end. In the fourth, after Westminster scored the first point, Truman rattled off the next three to take the lead. The Griffins then answered with eight straight to go up 9-3. The Bulldogs conjured up a run of their own with seven of the next eight points to tie it at 10-10. After three more ties, the final coming at 17-17, the Purple and White ended the set and the match on an 8-3 spurt.
At the conclusion of play, Hughes (Most Valuable Player),
Ellie Kaat and Hildebrand were named to the Westminster Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Next up, Truman will begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Friday, Sept. 7 at No. 3 Lewis with first serve set for 7 p.m. The Flyers (6-2) opened their season with five-straight wins before dropping two of their last three.
