RECAP: Truman Comeback Falls Short at Indianapolis, 83-79

INDIANAPOLIS - The Truman State University men's basketball team trailed Indianapolis by as many as 18 on Saturday afternoon inside Nicoson Hall. The Bulldogs then outscored the Greyhounds 24-8 over the next eight minutes and change to cut the deficit to two, but could never get any closer as their four-game winning streak was snapped, 83-79.

Truman falls to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in the GLVC while Indianapolis is now 9-4 on the season including 2-1 in league play. The path doesn't get any easier for the Bulldogs, though, as they must now travel to Southern Indiana (9-4, 1-2 GLVC) and the country's unanimous No. 1, Bellarmine (12-0, 3-0 GLVC).

Saturday, the Bulldogs were led by a trio of scorers in double-figures including Brodric Thomas (26), Cade McKnight (pictured/22) and Nathan Messer (12). Thomas added a pair of blocks and two steals, McKnight paced the squad in rebounds with eight and Turner Scott was on top of assists with three.

In the team statistics, Truman was held to just 40.3 percent (25-of-62) shooting, its second-lowest mark of the season, and 26.7 percent (8-for-30) from deep, the worst output of the winter. On the other side, Indianapolis shot 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the field and 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from three-point range. The Bulldogs made a season-high 21 free throws in 23 attempts (91.3 percent) and that percentage is the highest road clip of the year.

Truman stormed out to an 11-point lead, 11-4, and those 11 points came from its three leading scorers. However, Indianapolis proceeded to score 31 of the next 40 points to take its biggest advantage of the first half at 15, 35-20, with just over seven minutes to play in the first half. After that until the intermission, the scoring was much tighter, but favored the Bulldogs, 13-8, the make the halftime margin 10, 43-33.

Out of the break, Truman was able to pull within nine, 46-37, but Indianapolis then stretched its biggest lead even further, this time to 18, 68-50. Then came the Bulldogs big run, which made it a two-point game for the first of three times including 76-74, 78-76 and 81-79. During that 24-8 run, Thomas poured in 14 points and put the team on his back. However, the Greyhounds were able to hold on for the four-point decision.

The Bulldogs and Screaming Eagles will do battle on Thursday, Jan. 10.
