INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The Truman Volleyball team opened up their 2019 Crossover Tournament Slate against Ursuline College from the GMAC, and Morgan Smith led the way with 16 kills as Truman emerged 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22) victors over the Arrows. It was Smith's highest kill count since the 3-0 win over Trevecca Nazarene on September 21st.
With the score at 6-6 in the first set, Truman distanced themselves with a 5-1 run that included kills from Smith and Ellie Kaat. The Arrows would rally and get within one at 14-13, but Jocelynn Livingston got a crucial kill, and a service ace from Ainsley Heise followed and Truman would rebuild a four point lead at 18-14. Ursuline would rally to within two at 21-19 but two kills each from Livingston and Heise would give Truman the 25-19 win in the first set.
In the same manner as the first set, the teams began tied at six. This time Ursuline made a 4-0 run to gain a 10-6 advantage. Truman followed with an 8-2 run to take a 14-12 lead, with Sam Yancy picking up two kills in the run. From there, Truman would lead by as many as seven and cruised to a 25-19 win in the set.
Ursuline swung the momentum early in the third set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. Truman fought back to get within one at 11-10, but could not maintain the momentum as Ursuline went on a quick 6-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. The ensuing 6-0 Truman run got them back within one at 17-16, with Smith getting three kills in a five point span. But Truman could not draw even or take the lead the rest of the set at Ursuline took the set 25-22.
Like sets one and two, the team teams split the first 12 points 6-6. It set the tone for the set as the teams would go back and forth in spurts to get a lead, then draw even. Ursuline eventually took a five point lead at 22-17, but they would not score again. Lindsay Woltering would serve the last six points of the match, with two service aces. Fittingly, the match point was ended with Smith's final kill.
The team will take on UW-Parkside on 6 P.M. ET Friday and then Wayne State Saturday.
