GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Following up a tough loss at Grand Valley State, the Truman Men's Basketball team looked to bounce back as they took on the Davenport Panthers on Saturday afternoon. Despite shooting over 47% from the floor, the Bulldogs only made 6-17 threes and fell to the Panthers 88-66.
Early on, the Bulldogs hung tough. From a 12-12 tie Hunter Strait drained his first three of the contest to give Truman their first lead. The Panthers quickly answered to tie the game again, and from there the teams would take turns leading and tying the game. Down 22-17, Truman went on a 6-0 run with Strait making two free throws and Dylan Peeters and Turner Scott making layups to take a 23-22 lead. Davenport quickly took back the lead, and for the next few minutes any time Truman would tie the game, Davenport would go on a quick run to reestablish the lead. With 2:14 to go the game as tied at 35, and Davenport closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 43-37 lead into intermission.
Truman answered in kind with an 8-2 run to begin the second half. Strait opened with a three, and a three point play from Mark Rogers tied the game at 45. But once again, Davenport answered and quickly retook a four point lead. Finally, Truman took the lead again with 13:20 to go at 53-52 but would not lead again for the rest of the game as the Panthers defended their home court by shooting lights out the rest of the way en route to the 22 point win.
Brodric Thomas led the team with 19 points, while Cade McKnight grabbed five rebounds to the lead the way. McKnight also reached double figures with 12 points, as did Strait with 14 behind 3-5 shooting from downtown. He had three of the team's six points.
Truman will be at home next Thursday for their home opener against Missouri Southern State with tip off at 7 p.m.
