KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Lauren Dale and
Alyssa Hajduk (pictured) teamed up for a complete-game shutout to give the Truman State University softball team a game-one win over Rockhurst on Monday. However, trailing by one in the nightcap, 4-3, the Bulldogs left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and the Hawks escaped with the split.
After back-to-back splits to begin GLVC play, Truman is 12-3 overall and 2-2 in conference action. Next up, the Bulldogs will hit the road for the first time in the league schedule when they play at Lewis on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. On the other side, Rockhurst sits at 14-9 on the season including 3-1 within the GLVC and 6-2 in true road games. The Hawks are already six wins away from tying their total from a season ago (20-29).
In game one, Dale (8-1) handled the first five innings and did so with just four hits allowed, three walks and seven strikeouts. In relief, Hajduk picked up her second save in her las four appearances with only two hits surrendered, no free passes and two punchouts. Not only did Hajduk cap off the win, but tagged out Dale with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth before three-straight outs.
Truman's lone run came in the bottom of the second when
Kayla Quanstrum singled up the middle to bring
Adrienne Compton around. That hit for Quanstrum was the Bulldogs' third straight hit, all of which were singles with two outs.
In game two, three of Rockhurst's four runs came on a three-run blast by Emily Clark in the top of the third. One inning later, Compton put Truman on the board with a solo shot to right center, her third home run of the season and second in three games. The Hawks' fourth and much needed insurance run would come two frames later when Emily Truitt singled in Shelby Winkelman to make it 4-1.
Fast forward to the bottom of the seventh and Truman's first hit of the inning didn't come until there were already two outs recorded and Reisinger's fourth hit of the day was a solo blast to right center off the roof of baseball's first-base dugout. Three singles later,
Brooke VunCannon made it a one-run game with her base knock through the right side that pushed across
Emma Walbert. However, Compton then grounded into a fielder's choice to the shortstop for the third out that ended it.
Hajduk (3-1) got the start and lasted five and a third innings with four earned runs allowed on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. In relief,
Rachael Kernich gave up no runs and just one hit in the final inning and two-thirds.
