ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - After being shutout for the first time this season in game one at Lewis on Saturday, 5-0, the Truman State University softball team got just enough offense in the nightcap to salvage the split.
Adrienne Compton (pictured) used one of her five hits (5-for-7) on the day to send a ball over the fence in right field for a solo home run in the top of the eighth of game two that gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 victory.
Truman (13-4, 3-3 GLVC) has now split three-consecutive doubleheaders to open its league schedule while Lewis (10-14, 3-3 GLVC) has lost three of its last four games after winning four in a row prior to that. Next up, the Bulldogs will be at No. 20 Indianapolis (20-8, 3-3 GLVC) on Sunday with first pitch in game one set for 11 a.m. central time. The Greyhounds split a pair with visiting Quincy on Saturday.
Getting back to Compton, the junior has taken over everyday duties in right field with 13 of her 16 starts coming at that spot and her bat continues to get better. After Saturday's 5-for-7 stat line, Compton is now hitting .412, which is third on the team behind
Christa Reisinger (.590) and
Emma Walbert (.420). Prior to this season, the St. Louis native owned a career batting average of just .148 in 54 at-bats with one multi-hit game. So far in 2019, Compton has multiple hits in five outings and at least one base knock in all but two of the team's 17 games.
In game one, Truman managed just six hits, half of which came from Compton (3-for-3) as the other eight spots in the order combined to go 3-for-22 (.136 batting average). At the top of the Bulldogs' lineup, Reisinger was hitless in three at-bats and had her 15-game hitting streak snapped. Lewis' Cassie Shaw (3-5) went the distance and handed
Lauren Dale (8-2) her first loss in 15 days. Dale lasted just two innings and gave up four earned runs before
Rachael Kernich gave up the fifth run in four frames of relief.
In the nightcap, the Flyers scored first with an RBI single in the bottom of the third before the Bulldogs halted a scoring drought that had lasted 11 and two-thirds innings. In that top of the fifth frame, Reisinger hit a one-out single to center field and advanced to third on a two-base fielding error by the center fielder. Then, Walbert wasted no time tying it up with a run-scoring base knock to left.
After Lewis went back ahead, 3-1, in the bottom of that inning, Truman went right back to work in the top of the sixth. Pinch-hitter,
Maria McGonegle grounded out to the shortstop, but scored
Brooke VunCannon before
Macy Taylor came in on Reisinger's single to the second baseman. The third out came on that second play when pinch-runner,
Michaela Mooney, was thrown out at home, second baseman to the catcher.
Neither team scored in the seventh, so Truman was going to play its first extra-inning game of the season. In the top of the eighth, Compton went deep with one out before
Alyssa Hajduk finished her complete-game effort in the home half. Hajduk (4-1) surrendered three earned runs on seven hits with five walks and three strikeouts to grind out the victory.
