INDIANAPOLIS - Playing its first ranked opponent of 2019, the Truman State University softball team was at No. 20 Indianapolis for a morning doubleheader on Sunday. The Greyhounds proved too much to handle for the Bulldogs and outscored them 15-6 with scores of 8-3 and 7-3 on a rainy day at Baumgartner Field.
Set to host a doubleheader with future GLVC member, Southwest Baptist, on Tuesday at 2 p.m., Truman is now 13-6 on the season, including 3-5 in league play. The Bulldogs have dropped four of their last five games with some nonconference play on the horizon. On the other side, Indianapolis (22-8, 5-3 GLVC) has done just the opposite with victories in four of its last five contests.
On a day that Truman hit just .281 (16-for-57) as a team with a collective ERA of 8.75 in 12 innings pitched,
Christa Reisinger was the bright spot for the Bulldogs. Reisinger went 5-for-7 on the day with two home runs, both of which were in game one, for the second multi-blast game of her career, but first since 2016. The center fielder didn't strike out once in her eight plate appearances and her season batting average sits at .603.
In game one, Indianapolis scored four runs before Truman could get on the board with a two-run Reisinger shot to center in the top of the third that cut the deficit in half. After the Greyhounds added two more runs in both the bottom of that inning and the fourth to make it 8-2, Reisinger went deep, again to center, in the top of the seventh to make the final score 8-3.
Alyssa Hajduk (4-2) was handed her second loss in three starts as she gave up four earned runs on four hits in just two innings of work. In relief,
Rachael Kernich went the final four frames and also surrendered four earned runs.
In the nightcap, Truman was the first to score and did so with a run in each of the first two innings. In the first,
Emma Walbert singled in Reisinger before
Kayla Quanstrum brought in
Adrienne Compton with a base knock in the second. However, Indianapolis scored six of its seven runs in the bottom of the fourth as it sent 10 batters to the plate with four hits, three walks and two errors on the Bulldogs. Truman's third and final run came in the fifth when
Alyssa Rivera reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop and forced in Quanstrum. Indianapolis would later tack on a run in the sixth to make it 7-3.
Lauren Dale (8-3) dropped back-to-back starts for the first time this season as she allowed six earned runs on six hits in three and two-thirds with five free passes and no strikeouts. Prior to Saturday, Dale hadn't surrendered more than four earned runs in a single outing and that had happened just twice. After Dale, Hajduk handled the final 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.
