ROLLA, Mo. - Following game one of the Maryville doubleheader in Kirksville on April 5, the Truman State University softball team was 4-9 in GLVC play and near the bottom of the league's standings. Since then, the Bulldogs have won nine-straight conference games and risen all the way up to sole possession of fifth place. Friday afternoon, Truman made it GLVC sweep number four, this time at Missouri S&T, thanks to scores of 14-10 and 4-3.
With the most-recent sweep, Truman is now 27-12 overall, 13-9 in the GLVC and doubled its true-road wins for the season from 2-8 to 4-8. Next up, the Bulldogs are at Drury on Saturday with first pitch in game one set for noon. Wednesday, the Panthers were ranked 10th in the NCAA's first edition of the regional rankings. As for Missouri S&T, the Miners fell to 13-29 on the season, 7-13 in league action and have lost four in a row.
Friday,
Christa Reisinger's (pictured) record-breaking senior campaign continued as she stole seven bases to set Truman's new single-season record with 47 (Christen Belcher, 45 in 2006). Reisinger also racked up 11 total bases on the day to give her 497 for her career, breaking the old mark of 495 (Elizabeth Economon, 2001-04). When it comes to Reisinger's batting average this season, her lowest was .568 on April 6. Since then, the center field southpaw has hit .643 (18-for-28) in 10 games with a 1.357 slugging percentage and on-base percentage of .737. Partner those numbers with 23 runs scored, one double, two triples, five home runs, 14 RBI, 38 total bases, nine walks, one hit-by-pitch, only one strikeout, and 17 stolen bases in 18 attempts. Reisinger also hit two home runs in game one on Friday to give her 11 on the season, a new career high.
Game one featured an absolute slugfest between Truman and Missouri S&T that saw 24 runs scored on 28 hits. Through the first two and a half innings, the Bulldogs had outscored the Miners by six, 9-3, and looked to be in complete control. However, the home team then brought in five in the third and two more in the fourth to give itself a one-run lead, 10-9. Then, in the top of the fifth,
Kayla Quanstrum and Reisinger hit back-to-back solo jacks before
Adrienne Compton singled in
Emma Walbert to make it 12-10 in favor of the visitors. In the sixth, just for good measure, Reisinger smacked a two-run shot that looked identical to her first home run and locked in her third-career multi-homer game, second this season.
The nightcap featured significantly less offense with seven runs on 13 hits as Missouri S&T struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. Two frames later, Reisinger got Truman on the board with an RBI double to center that pushed across
Lauren Bowman. In the bottom of that inning, the Miners tacked on two more runs for a 3-1 lead and backed the Bulldogs into a corner. Three innings after that, Truman cut the deficit to one, 3-2, with a Bowman RBI single before
Brooke VunCannon and Compton each brought in a run the inning after to seal it for the Purple and White.
Lauren Dale (14-7) picked up both wins as she threw 5.2 innings of relief in the first game followed by a complete game in the nightcap.
