EAST PEORIA, Ill. - Prior to Friday's first day of the 2019 GLVC Tournament, No. 22 Southern Indiana, the defending league and national champ, had only been shut out three times in 50 games. Truman ace,
Alyssa Hajduk (pictured), was dead set on raising that total to four. Hajduk went toe-to-toe with the 2019 GLVC Pitcher of the Year, Jennifer Leonhardt, and led her team to a 1-0 victory thanks to her seventh career complete-game shutout. However, in the Bulldogs' second game of the day, they suffered a 10-3 setback to No. 12 Indianapolis.
Hajduk (14-5) scattered just three hits over seven innings and only let two Southern Indiana baserunners reach third base. The junior southpaw was able to break a five-game skid in which she'd given up at least one run as she walked four batters and struck out two. Her counterpart, Leonhardt (19-8), surrendered the one run on an
Emma Walbert RBI single in the fourth to go with seven hits allowed, four free passes and five punchouts.
In the nightcap, Truman was playing catch up all game as Indianapolis scored three in the first inning, two in the second, two in the fifth, and three more in the seventh.
Lauren Dale (14-10) gave up seven runs, four earned, on seven hits with two walks and no strikeouts over four frames of work. In relief,
Rachael Kernich made her first career GLVC Tournament appearance with three innings, three earned surrendered, five hits, zero free passes, and two punchouts.
With their win over the Screaming Eagles, the sixth-seeded Bulldogs (29-16) earned their way to Saturday's play and will face fourth-seeded Maryville (33-18) at 11 a.m. Truman and Maryville split their regular season doubleheader in Kirksville on April 5, 0-6 and 3-1.
