RECAP: Volleyball Sweeps on Final Day of Tournament Play

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Truman State volleyball team wrapped up the Bellarmine Tournament today with victories over Charleston 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-10, 25-16) and Trevecca Nazarene 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-19). Freshman setter Rachel DeFries had 38 assists against Charleston, which was her highest mark on the young season. It helped propel an attack that hit .305 in the match with 55 total kills. In the second match the defense shined as they racked up 73 digs and limited Trevecca to just .062 hitting.

Truman started really quickly against Charleston. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-3 lead and maintained a multiple point edge the rest of the set. A 7-3 run in the middle of the set gave Truman a 15-9 edge. Ainsley Heise, Sam Yancy and Jocelynn Livingston all had kills in the run. A kill from Morgan Smith gave Truman a double digit lead at 21-11 and Truman cruised to win the set 25-17.

The second set saw Charleston start really quickly as they jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Truman would get as close as three but dropped the set 25-20.

The tables turned again in the third set as Truman jumped out to a 7-2 lead and didn't look back. They ended the set on an 11-4 run that included an ace from Lauren Wacker and a set ending kill from DeFries to seal the 25-10 win.

In the final set it started out close, tied at six. From there Truman got the lead and ran away with it. Back to back kills from Heise and Smith caused Charleston to call a timeout, but TSU kept rolling and won the set 25-16.

Smith led the team with 19 kills in the match.

Match Two
Truman jumped out to a quick 10-1 lead in the first set against Trevecca. Smith had three kills in the opening run. However, Trevecca would rally. Down double digits at 15-5, Trevecca would eventually tie the set at 19. They took a brief lead at 20-19 but Truman would quickly take it back with a kill from Livingston and would not trail again. The set was knotted up at 21 and 24 but Smith got the final two kills of the set to win 26-24.

After dropping the first point of the second set, Truman reeled off 11 straight to go up double digits. Smith had three straight kills in the run, four total. The Bulldogs coasted to a 25-12 win in the set.

Down 3-2 in the third set, Elise Hardesty got a service ace to knot the set up. But Trevecca would make life difficult for TSU as they led 11-6. But Truman had another run brewing. An 8-0 spurt gave Truman the lead and they never looked back. Lindsay Woltering got two aces in this stretch and Elise Hardesty and Ambria Whitlock each picked up kills. Up 15-12, another 5-0 run by Truman gave them much needed separation. A late 4-0 rally from Trevecca forced Truman to use a timeout up 23-17, and from there Truman finished the set 25-19 to take the match.

Smith racked up 35 kills on the day. Wacker led the way with 38 digs. In the first match Smith, Yancy and Livingston each had double digit kills (Smith had a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs). In the second four players had double digit digs with Wacker at 21, Hardesty with 16, Meghan Gasper with 11 and Woltering with 10.

The team hits the court next in Romeoville, Ill. on the 27th to take on Lewis at 6 p.m.
