RECAP: Volleyball Takes One of Two on Second Day of Tournament

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.—Truman hit the court early on Saturday for the second day of action at the Nova Southeastern Tournament. They emerged triumphant over Shaw 3-1 (20-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-12) but fell in the second matchup to Nova Southeastern 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-12). They close the tournament with a 2-2 record as they head into the Drury Tournament next weekend.

Match One
Morgan Smith got the first point of the game on a kill, but Shaw went on a 4-0 run after that to take an early lead. Truman worked their way back to tie the set at 8 apiece, but a 7-0 Shaw run followed that put them up the rest of the set. Truman would get within one at 19-18 but Shaw took the set 25-20.

In the second set Truman got the attack going with early kills from Smith, Jocelynn Livingston and Sam Yancy. The Bulldogs built an early 10-6 lead and back to back kills from Smith and a third from Elise Hardesty built a 13-6 advantage. From there Truman cruised to a 25-14 win in the set.

The third set started tied at two apiece but then a 7-1 run by Truman gave them a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the set. Up 16-8 Smith had a run of four straight kills, and TSU took the set 25-12.

Truman never trailed in the third set. From a 3-3 tie TSU went on a 9-2 run to establish the momentum and rolled to a 25-12 victory in the set and a 3-1 win in the match.

Morgan Smith had 22 kills in the match, which set a career high. Elise Hardesty had 33 assists and Lauren Wacker led the way with 33 digs.

Match Two
The second match of the day, against the hosts—Nova Southeastern, was a nail-biter. Truman started quickly in this match as they took the first two sets but ended up dropping the final three as NSU took the match 3-2.

Truman took the first four points of the set, but it went back and forth until it was tied at 11. NSU took the lead at 20-18, TSU took the lead at 21-20, back to a draw at 22 and then TSU got the final three points to win the set 25-22.

NSU turned the tables as they jumped out to a quick start in the second set, but Truman fought back to tie the set at 8. The middle of the set went back and forth until Truman took the lead at 17-16. Up 20-19, Smith got a crucial kill for the Bulldogs that gave them the lead for the rest of the set as they won 25-22.

After another run to start the third set, Truman looked to finish the match. An early 7-4 lead for the Bulldogs was erased and the middle of the set went back and forth between being even and one team taking advantage on the other. A kill by Ainsley Heise evened the set at 20, but from there NSU got five of seven points to take the set 25-22.

The fourth set saw Truman jump out to a lead once again at 10-7 but an 8-0 run for NSU got them the lead at 15-10. A kill from Livingston ended the streak but Truman could not take the lead back during the set and NSU forced the fifth set 25-18.

NSU jumped out to an 8-1 lead to start the final set, but a kill from Livingston and a service ace from Lindsay Woltering started a run that pulled Truman within two at 9-7, forcing a timeout from NSU. From there, the hosts would maintain their lead and finish the set 15-12 to take the match 3-2.

Smith and Livingston each got double digit kills while Yancy, Wacker and Meghan Gasper each got double digit digs.
