RECAP: Overtime Goal Hands Truman First Loss

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A late goal in overtime by Davenport handed the Truman Women's Soccer team their first loss of the 2019 season on Sunday.

Katherine Steiner headed a ball over a pair of Truman defenders that freed up Madeleine Zayan for a breakaway and she beat keeper Beth Hopwood for the only tally in the game with just 37 seconds left in the first overtime period.

The Bulldogs had turned up the pressure late in the second half and had five corner kicks in the final 15 minutes of regulation but could not find the back of the net. Faith Branson put two shots toward the goal that had to be stopped by Panthers keeper Samantha Beckles. Branson's second shot with just under nine minutes to play had to saved off the crossbar.

Hopwood preserved the tie with a diving stop off the foot of Holly Bertke with three minutes showing on the clock.

In the overtime, Truman had the first four shots with only Hanna Burke's free kick from 30 yards out making it on goal.

Match totals saw Truman with 14 shots and five on goal while Davenport had six of their 15 total shots on net.

Truman will open up the Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule at home next Sunday by hosting rival Quincy at 2:30 p.m.
