Bulldogs Fall to Hawks as GLVC Play Resumes

KANSAS CITY—The Truman Volleyball team was back in action for the first time since the Midwest Region Crossover Thursday night as they took on Rockhurst in a GLVC contest. The Bulldogs hung tough but ultimately fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-23) to the Hawks.

Early in the first set Truman looked good as a kill from Hanna Berry gave them a 4-3 lead and later an ace from Katy Motz put them up 6-4. But shortly after a 5-0 run from RU put them up 10-7. For most of the set Truman was playing catch up. Down 22-14, the Bulldogs went on a 7-1 run to pull within 23-21. Monica Brown started the run with a kill, Ellie Kaat picked up a kill and Morgan Smith's ace made it a two point set. But Truman's rally fell just short as RU took the set.

The Hawks got the upper hand early in the second set, but a 3-0 run from the Bulldogs which included a kill from Allison Beaton and an ace from Berry got Truman back within two. Later in the set, it looked like RU was going to pull away but a 4-1 run for Truman tied the set at 11. However, from there the Hawks jumped out to a four point lead and Truman was unable to catch back up.

Emma Wollert began the third set with a kill and Truman jumped out to a 3-1 lead to start the set. But Rockhurst rallied back, and from there the teams seesawed back and forth giving and take a few points at a time. Later in the set, a 4-0 run for the Bulldogs gave them a 13-12 lead. Kaat picked up back to back kills to begin the run and Ainsley Heise picked up an ace. The two teams were neck and neck until the Hawks pulled away late for a 23-17 lead. From there the Bulldogs reeled off four in a row to pull back within two at 23-21 before RU picked up match point. Truman was able to stay alive for two match points before RU finished the match.

Kaat led the team with eight kills, while Motz led with 13 assists and Smith led with 15 digs and two aces. Truman will get another chance to get their first GLVC win Saturday afternoon at William Jewell.
