RECAP: Truman Grinds Out Win Over SBU In Regular Season Finale

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A strong third quarter by the Truman Women's Basketball team lifted them past Southwest Baptist University 47-41 in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon in Pershing Arena. The Bulldogs will be the number two seed in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason tournament that will begin on Wednesday night in Kirksville at 5:15 p.m. against an opponent to be determined later this weekend.
 
Both teams were sluggish to start the game as they combine for a 4-of-21 and 0-for-11 from three shooting with the score tied at 11 apiece after the first quarter.  The Bearcats held a 22-20 lead at the halftime intermission.
 
Hannah Belanger picked up the energy for Truman in the third scoring the first five out of the locker room, including her first three-pointer of the game to give Truman the lead they would not relinquish at 25-24. 
 
Truman had an 11-0 run and took a 35-27 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
The Bearcats got as close as four at 36-32 with seven minutes to play but Truman a 9-1 run gave the Bulldogs some cushion.
 
Belanger and Allison Thomas was the only Truman players in double figures with 10 points but the Bulldogs had balanced scoring with seven of eight players in the book charting points. 
 
Ellie Weltha finished with a team high 13 rebounds.
 
Shooting was the story of the game with both teams struggling from the floor. SBU was 16-of-62 (25.8%) including 3-of-20 from three while Truman was 19-52 (36.5%) and only 3-of-19 (15.8%) from distance.
 
Kyleigh Vaught led SBU with 15 points.
 
Truman will wait for the GLVC bracket to be unveiled by the league office this weekend for their opponent in the quarterfinal game on Wednesday night in Kirskville.
