KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The Truman Baseball team opened their home slate Friday, playing a doubleheader against the University of Sioux Falls. In the first game, a seventh inning rally for the Bulldogs fell just short as the Cougars held on 6-5, and in game two a 2-0 lead got away from the Bulldogs as the Cougars won 6-2.
Game One
The first game of the doubleheader was a seven inning affair that came down to the wire. But ultimately Connor McKenna (0-2) took the loss while Alex Krout (3-0) picked up the win. USF jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and two in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, Holden Missey belted a solo homerun to get the Bulldogs on the board. USF would pick up two more in the top of the fifth, making it 6-1. Jake Schneider hit a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-2, and the rally was on.
In the bottom of the sixth, Missey hit his second solo shot of the game to make it 6-3. Then in the seventh, Reid Wilson started the thrilling finish with a one out single. Brennan Perkins walked, putting two runners on. Will Fromm brough Wilson in with an RBI single to make it 6-4. Evan Kayser beat out a slow roller to third base that brought Perkins in to make it 6-5. With two outs, Luke Turner pinch hit for pinch runner Justin Maloney (in the DH spot), but was unable to keep the rally going as the game ended 6-5.
Game Two
Zachry Schneider got the start for the Bulldogs in game two, and allowed just one run on four hits in six innings pitched. He fanned seven batters in a no-decision. Matt Graham picked up the win to move to 2-1 on the season, throwing a complete game. Jaren Guck (0-1) took the loss for Truman.
In the bottom of the fourth, Missey launched his third homer of the day to begin the scoring. Will Fromm drew a walk and then Dakota Spicer hit a one out single and advanced to second on the throw, moving Fromm to third. Landon Hamm picked up an RBI on the sac fly to bring Fromm in.
From there the Cougars scored six unanswered runs, including four in the last two innings to take both games on the day.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow at 12 and 3 to conclude their four game series.
