RECAP: Bats Go BOOM To Earn Split For Truman Softball

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - A pair of grand slams in a 10-run first inning propelled the Truman Softball team to a doubleheader split with Rockhurst University on Saturday. The Hawks took game one 11-7 while Truman won going away in game two 13-5. The Bulldogs will host Southwest Baptist in the season finale tomorrow at noon.

In the opener, Truman staked themselves out to a 2-0 lead after one with RBI singles from Briannia Klein and Lauren Bowman.

Rockhurst got a run back in the third then took the lead on a 2-run homer from Maya Galloper in the fourth and extended the lead to 6-2 on a three-run shot from Laura Marks.

Hawks pitcher Lexie Storrer retired nine of the next 10 hitters she faced after the first inning until Kayla Quanstrum led off Truman's fifth with her second home run of the season to cut the lead in half.  Klein picked up her second RBI, scoring Emma Walbert to make it 6-4.

However, a pair of errors led to two more runs for Rockhurst in their sixth to make it 8-4.

The Bulldogs fought back with three of their own and had runners at second and third before a called third strike led Truman trailing 8-7 after six. During the at bat, Walbert had and RBI single, Ellie Weltha drew a bases loaded walk and Klein picked up her third RBI on a groundout.

A two-run single by Josie Lindenman with two outs in the seventh gave the Hawks some breathing room and a third run on a hit by Marks was the final run of the game.

Game two started with both starting pitchers struggling with their control.

Two walks and a double by Marks put Rockhurst up 1-0 as the Hawks left two on base.

Truman used a single and three walks plus a pair of wild pitches to tie the game at one to bring Quanstrum up with the bases loaded. She would deliver with a slam over the left field fence to make it 5-1.

The inning was not done as another two walks and two singles made it 6-1 and Weltha connected for the second slam in the inning to make ti 10-1 all with just one out in the inning.

Truman sent 13 hitters to the plate.

A three-run home run from Shelby Winkleman cut the lead down to 10-4 in the top of the second.

The Bulldogs left them loaded in their half of the second but capitalized on a two-run single to left by Bowman in the third to extend the lead out to 12-4.

Rockhurst got a solo home run from Gallagher to lead off the fourth but a fielding error in the bottom of the inning got the run back for the Bulldogs. Truman again left the bases loaded.

Nicole Havel pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning to pick up her first win of the season.

Quanstrum finished 4-for-6 on the day with five RBIs.
