KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - A five-run sixth inning and a strong pitching performance in the finale gave the Truman Softball team a doubleheader sweep over Southwest Baptist on Sunday. Truman State took game one 6-4 and game two 4-0.
The teams exchanged runs in the third inning of game one with the Bearcats striking on an RBI single from Kaitlyn Bagby and Truman countering with a run on a wild pitch with Macy Taylor racing home with two outs to even the score.
The Bearcats would score single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to lead 4-1.
A switch was flipped in the Bulldog sixth as they got five of their 12 hits in the frame and scored five runs to take the lead. The inning started with hits from Kayla Quanstrum and Lauren Bowman. Lauren Stade followed with a double and Callie Unrein doubled to pull Truman to within one at 4-3. Following a strikeout, Emma Walbert belted a bases clearing triple to give the Bulldogs the lead. Ellie Weltha grounded out but played Walbert for an insurance run.
McKenzie West stranded a two-out walk to pick up the win in relief.
Game two saw Truman grab the early lead with Maria McGonegle ripping a double to left center to score Weltha and Brianna Klein raced home to beat out a tag fielders choice play at third for the second run in the first.
In the second, Klein singled in two more runs to put Truman up 4-0.
From there, Nicole Havel worked around hits in the next four innings while striking out five and walking one to pick up her second straight win and first complete-game shutout.
