PITTSBURG, Kan.—The Truman Volleyball team played a doubleheader Friday in the Gorilla Classic Tournament as they took on St. Mary's (Texas) and Sioux Falls (S.D.). In the first game, a Truman comeback fell short against St. Mary's, who downed the Bulldogs 3-2 (25-12, 25-11, 18-25, 17-25, 15-6). In the second match, Sioux Falls took all three sets to win their match 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-17).
Match One
St. Mary's controlled the first two sets, but coming out in set three things would be different. While it was tightly contested, Truman used a series of 3-0 runs to take and maintain the lead. From a six all tie, Maura Ploesser started the first with a kill and later picked up a service ace. Ainsley Heise picked up an ace in the second 3-0 spurt and in the third Ellie Kaat had three straight kills. In the fourth 3-0 run Ploesser tallied back to back kills for the first time in her career.
In the fourth set, Truman was down 7-5 but jumped into the lead with a 7-0 run. Ploesser picked up two more aces. St. Mary's fought back to within two points but a 3-0 run with back to back aces from Katy Motz put Truman back up by five. Truman took the set, but could not get their footing under them in the fifth set as St. Mary's took the match.
Match Two
Truman jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set. Morgan Smith picked up two aces in the run. USF would answer, and most of the set the teams would seesaw back and forth taking a few points then giving them back. Following a kill from Heise late in the set, Truman led 23-22. But USF took the last three points to win the set.
Over the next two sets the Bulldogs were unable to get in any rhythm and the Panthers pulled away in the middle of both sets to take the match.
The Bulldogs will play one more match in this tournament, tomorrow at 12:30 they will take on Northwest Oklahoma State.
