Bulldogs Drop Tough Match at Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo.—The Truman Volleyball team resumed their season Tuesday night against MIAA opponent and former conference rival Missouri Western, and the Griffons downed the Bulldogs 3-1 (25-16, 15-25, 25-8, 25-18).

During the first set, MWSU took an early lead, but a 4-0 run by the Bulldogs cut the Griffon lead to just 11-8. Allison Beaton and Morgan Smith bookended the run with kills. But the Bulldogs could not draw within any closer than three points the rest of the set as MWSU went up 1-0.

In set number two, the tables turned. Truman took advantage of some early Griffon errors, Ainsley Heise picked up a kill and back to back kills from Ellie Kaat capped a 7-0 run to start the set. Later in the set, Hanna Berry picked up the lone ace in the match as Truman led wire to wire in the set to tie the match.

MWSU took back momentum in the third set, taking eight of the first ten points scored in the set. The Griffons seized control and would not let it go as they won the third set. In the fourth set, MWSU got out to an early lead and would not be caught.

Kaat led the team with 14 kills, Rachel DeFries led with 24 assists and Smith led with 17 digs. Macy Vanfossan made her first appearance in a Bulldog uniform and recorded two digs.

Truman will resume their season this weekend at home as they host Missouri S&T Friday night and Drury Saturday afternoon.
