Truman State Bulldogs Rock At "The Rock" 59-32 For Seventh Straight Win

QUINCY, Ill. - The Truman State Football team gashed the Quincy Hawks for 500 yards of total offense, picked off three QU passes, returning one for a touchdown and won their seventh straight game in a 59-32 thrashing on Saturday.

The Bulldogs spotted the high octane Quincy offense with a 10-0 lead before running back Denim Cook busted off one of two 40-plus yard touchdown runs on the day.

Truman took their first lead at 14-13 when Zach Zerwig kept his concentration and reeled in a circus catch in the end zone from 38-yards away from quarterback Nolan Hair.

QU's Tionne Harris engineered a 12-play 75-yard drive and ran it in from 10 yards out to put Quincy back up 19-14 with 4:24 left in the half.

From there it was all Bulldogs.

Cook powered his way on a 47-yard sprint on Truman's next possession and then after a costly personal foul flag on the Hawks deep in their end, the Bulldogs forced a punt, set up shop at midfield and ran a precise two-minute drill that resulted in a 38-yard field goal from Grant Ross to extend the lead to 24-19 at the break.

Truman exploded in the first six minutes of the third quarter with Cook scoring a third TD on a nine-yard run on the Bulldogs first possession of the half.

On the next drive, Jake Closser stepped in front of a pass and ran it in from 27 yards out for his second straight week with a pick six.

Ryan Olivas snared the next Harris pass and returned it to the QU five where Collin Sutton waltzed into the brown end zone to bust the game wide open at 45-19.

Shamar Griffith capped off the 38-straight points by the Bulldogs later in the quarter with a four-yard touchdown run.

Quincy would not go away and scored an eight-yard TD catch by Jalen Lawrence and then got a 54-yard scoop and score fumble recovery to get to within 20 with 11:28 to play in the game.

The Bulldogs used their 1-2 punch of Cook and Griffith to grind off nearly eight minutes of the fourth quarter clock with Cook punching it in from two yards away for his fourth TD of the game.

The trio of Griffith, Cook and Sutton accounted for 374 of the team's 381 rushing yards on the day and six scores. Griffith finished with 177 on 29, Cook with 154 on 12 and Sutton with 43 on seven.

Truman has their first seven game winning streak since 1994 and will host McKendree (Ill.) for senior day at Stokes Stadium next Saturday afternoon with a noon kickoff.
