JOPLIN, Mo.—The Truman Baseball team opened the MIAA/GLVC Crossover Tournament Saturday against Northwest Missouri State, and while they scored first on an RBI single by Jack Owens in the bottom of the first the Bearcats scored 11 unanswered runs to win the game 11-1. Zachry Schneider took the loss to drop to 1-1 while Max Spitzmiller got the win to improve to 2-1.
In the bottom of the first Luke Roussel got a one out single and then moved to second on a wild pitch. From there Brennan Perkins singled to third base to move Roussel 90 feet away. Owens then singled through the left side to bring in the run.
In the bottom of the fifth, with the score 5-1, Truman had the bases loaded as Simon Murray had walked and stole second base. Perkins was hit by a pitch and then Owens walked to load the bases with two outs, but the Bulldogs could not bring another run across the plate.
From there NWMSU scored three in the top of the sixth and three more in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Will Fromm and Justin Maloney each had two hits for the Bulldogs, while Jordan Marlott made his season debut throwing 3.1 innings of relief and only allowed two hits. Schneider went five innings in the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Truman will be back in action tomorrow morning as they play a doubleheader against host school Missouri Southern, starting at 9 AM.
