CHICAGO - The Truman State Softball team overpowered UW-Parkside 9-0 in the opener but fell 4-3 to Purdue Northwest in the opening games of the Rosemont Dome Invitational on Thursday. The Bulldogs return inside on Friday afternoon with games against Ferris (Mich.) State and Sagniaw Valley (Mich.) State.
Truman State 9, UW-Parkside 0
Breianna Klein drove in three runs and was the winning pitcher in the 9-0 blanking of the Parkside Rangers to open the Rosemont Dome Invitational.
Callie Unrein got things started with an RBI triple to score
Emma Walbert in the bottom of the first.
The Bulldogs made Parkside pay for a one-out error in the third. Klein picked up a two-out RBI single to score Walbert for the second run and
Maria McGonegle doubled to bring in Klein.
Cameryn Patterson followed with a single to make it 4-0 Truman State.
Taylor Spencer sparked a five-run fourth with a double to leadoff inning.
Kayla Quanstrum knocked an RBI single and Klein busted one up the middle for two more runs. The final shot came from
Sydney Parkerson, who singled down the left field line to score two more to make it 9-0.
In the circle,
McKenzie West made the start and did not allow a hit in her inning and a third pitched. Klein came on in relief and struck out four to earn the win out of the pen.
Purdue Northwest 4, Truman State 3
The Pride came back from 3-1 down to beat the Bulldogs 4-3. Purdue Northwest took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI groundout but Truman came right back with a pair of runs in the top of the third.
Walbert and Unrein both reached to start the inning and were in scoring position with no outs. Klein brought Walbert in with a groundout and Unrein scored on a bunt single by McGonegle.
Truman tacked on another run in the fourth when
Shelby Webster doubled to lead things off.
Macy Taylor pinch ran and advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on
Lauren Stade's single up the middle. Truman stranded runners on second and third with only one out.
A hit by pitch followed with a triple closed the gap to 3-2. A basehit scored the tying run chasing
Nicole Havel from the circle and bringing in
Annabel Zimmer. Two straight strikeouts and a fly out left two Pride runners on base.
A pair of doubles in the bottom of the fifth put Purdue Northwest on top 4-3.
The Bulldogs had two on with one out in the sixth and came up empty and went quietly in the seventh to close the game.
Walbert, Webster and Stade had two hits each for the Bulldogs. Zimmer took the loss in relief as she fanned four and allowed two hits in three innings pitched.
