Saints Take Series Finale From Bulldogs

ST. LOUIS—The Truman Baseball team dropped the fourth and final game of their set with Maryville on Sunday afternoon as they fell 19-8 to the Saints. Alex Leary (1-3) took the loss for the Bulldogs while Nick Schmidt (1-0) was the winning pitcher.

Maryville scored six in the first inning, and then in the bottom of the second Cole Eggerding, returning to his hometown for the first time as a Bulldog, came in and pitched three innings; his longest appearance so far this season. He allowed two runs in three innings of work. After his day was done, Jordan Marlott and Jackson Mitchell pitched the next two innings. Drew Hnilo and JJ Swafford pitched the last two innings of the game—Hnilo making his first appearance of the season and Swafford his second.

The Bulldogs finally got on the board in the sixth inning as Holden Missey homered to right center to lead off the inning, then two batters later Jack Darwin hit one to right to make it 12-2. Sam Smith followed with a single to center, Luke Roussel walked and with two outs Simon Murray was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tal Dean singled to center to bring two runs in and make it 12-4.

Maryville answered the Bulldogs with seven runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 19-4, and in the top of the eighth Truman picked up four more runs as Jake Schneider led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch while Murray walked and Dean singled to load the bases. Brennan Perkins singled to bring Schneider in, and Missey singled to right to bring Murray in. An RBI groundout from Darwin with the bases still loaded made it 19-7 as Dean came in. Roussel was hit by pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the eighth run of the game.

Truman will host Rockhurst at 1:00 pm at Truman Baseball Park in their home opener this Friday.
