Softball Drops Two to UIS

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Softball team continued their home weekend Sunday against Illinois Springfield, falling 6-4 in game one and 12-4 in game two. In game one, Payton Long (11-4) picked up the win while Mya McCubin (0-4) took the loss. In game two Reagan Miles (9-3) picked up the win while Annabel Zimmer (1-11) took the loss.

Game One

UIS jumped out to an early lead with a four run top of the first, but Truman answered in the bottom of the frame—Emma Walbert got a leadoff double, followed by singles from Kayla Quanstrum and Camryn Patterson; which brought Walbert in to make it 4-1. Bri Klein reached on an error to load the bases with nobody out, but the Bulldogs were unable to plate another run in the frame.

In the top of the sixth, UIS struck for two more runs to make it 6-1 with only one out, but Nicole Havel pitched out of a jam with two on and one out to keep it a five run game.

Truman had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh, started out with a single from Maria McGonegle. Later Macy Taylor reached on a fielder's choice while McGonegle was thrown out for the second out of the inning. Callie Unrein walked to move Taylor to second. Walbert reached on an error to load the bases. Quanstrum followed with a single to plate one run and made the score 6-2. Patterson was hit by a pitch to make it 6-3. Klein followed with a single up the middle to make it 6-4. Ellie Weltha came up with the bases loaded and the winning run on first base but flied out to end the game.

Game Two

UIS scored three runs in the first two innings, and then in the third inning put up eight runs to make it 11-0. In the bottom of the third Walbert singled with one out and then moved to second on an RBI groundout. Patterson reached on an error to bring Walbert in and make it 11-1. Klein followed by reaching on a fielder's choice and Patterson beat the throw to keep the inning going. McGonegle singled to load the bases, and then Weltha followed with a two RBI double to left field; that was just a foot away from clearing the fence for a grand slam. Truman struck for three runs in the frame to make it 11-3.

In the top of the fourth UIS struck for one more run to make it 12-3. In the bottom of the fifth McGonegle singled with one out, then Taylor Spencer reached on an error with two outs. A wild pitch moved both runners up a base, and Macy Taylor singled to left to bring McGonegle in to make it 12-4. On the next play Taylor was out on a fielder's choice to end the game.

The Bulldogs will host Drury on Saturday at noon for a doubleheader with the Panthers.
