GRINNELL, Iowa - The Truman Cross Country teams opened up their 2022 season at the 60th Les Duke Invite hosted by Grinnell (Iowa) College on Saturday. Cora Stimpson led the women to a second place showing while Nathan Key led the men to a sixth place team finish.
Stimpson led four Bulldogs to place within the top 10 as she finished the six-kilometer course in 23:39.9, good for fourth overall position. Freshmen Breanna Mathes was five seconds back and in fifth place and newcomer Kate Yates seventh at 23:50.3. Addie Mathis was eighth at 25:59.1
Freshman Emma Schultz was the final scorer for the Bulldogs in 29th place at 25:36.2. Reese Howard (34th-26:04.3) and Kati Schoeneberg (35th-26:05.2) rounded out the Truman team.
The women scored 53 points to finish six back of team champion Central (Iowa) College.
Key ran the 8K course in 26:29.5 to place 15th overall. He was followed by Andrew Henton in 21st at 26:54 and Ryan Harness in 22nd at 26:56.5. A trio of freshmen were next across the line for Truman with Jacob Gutzman in 34th (27:46.1), Sam Kallaos in 39th (28:03.2) and Max Fuller in 42nd (28:55.7). Joe Armour placed 48th in a time of 31:20.7.
The men amassed 131 points. Wartburg (Iowa) College took the men's team title with 39 points followed by Central with 41.
The Bulldogs return to the course next Friday at the Larry Young Invitational, hosted by Columbia (Mo.) College and contested at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.
