Volleyball Starts Out Fast But Can't Hold Off Drury In Home Debut

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – In the home opener at Pershing Arena for the Truman State Volleyball team, the Bulldogs came out hot but Drury was able to fend off six set points in the third set and used that momentum to take the match 3-1 on Friday evening.

The Bulldogs scored the first three points of the night and led 10-3 to force an early Drury timeout in set 1. Six straight points, including two kills by Jessica Proszenyak and three attack errors by the Panthers gave the Bulldogs an 18-6 cushion. They would go on to win the first set 25-11.

Set two saw Drury score the first four and the Bulldogs battle back with seven in-a-row. Drury had a 17-11 lead. Ainsley Heise had a pair of aces during a 6-0 Truman run to tie the set at 17 each. The Bulldogs led 23-21 but Chloe Rear got a kill and an ace to tie the set. Emily Strauss and Stormi Tadlock blocked an attack to push Drury to 24 points and an attack error tied the match at a set apiece.

Neither team could establish any momentum in set three. At 15 all, Truman scored four of the next five to take a 19-16 lead. Following an ace by Proszenyak, the Bulldogs led 23-19 but Drury reeled off three straight points to close to within one. An attack error gave Truman a chance to close the set but Drury scored two straight to knot it at 24. Truman would go up 25-24, 26-25, 27-26, 28-27. Drury would score the final three points on two attack errors and a kill by Rear.

The fourth set was all Drury as they made a 3-1 Bulldog lead evaporate. They would lead 10-5 forcing a Truman timeout and kept things going by scoring 10 of the next 12 points to take command 20-7.

Proszenyak had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs and added four aces for 16 total points scored. Maura Ploesser had 10 kills on a team-high 34 attacks to hit .294 for the match. Emma Baierl had 30 assists for Truman and Lexi Arnel led in digs with 20.

Salma Lewis had 12 kills for Drury while Rear notched 11 kills and 23 assists on the evening.

The Bulldogs will be back in action against Missouri S&T at 3 p.m. in Pershing Arena.
