Truman Volleyball Falls Twice In Opening Day At Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - 

Truman State 0, South Dakota Mines 3

Late pushes by the Hardrockers of South Dakota Mines in each set ultimately dashed the Truman Bulldogs on Friday morning. Each set saw the two schools tied or within one point when reaching the midway point of the set only to see SD Mines find a push in the later stages to end up sweeping the contest three straight. 

Hanna Berry and Annabelle Crowder led Truman with nine kills each and Crowder led in digs with nine. Jacey Koethe led the Hardrockers in kills (13), aces 93) and blocks (4) while Kiley Metzer had 41 assists.

Set 1: SD Mines 25, Truman State 19

Six ties dotted the first half of the set with the Bulldogs going up 14-12 on a kill by Crowder off a pass from Lexi Arnel. Morgan Daugherty put the next ball down for SD Mines and they scored four straight to take the lead and forced a Bulldog timeout. Three more points during the run opened the match up at 19-14. Truman got as close as three at 20-17 bu five of the next seven when to the opponents.

Set 2: SD Mines 25, Truman State 18

Tied at nine, the Hardrockers took advantage of a pair of attack errors and used a service ace to go up 12-9 forcing a Truman timeout. Monica Brown and Kate Benzing blocked the next scoring attack and Truman scored a pair of points to pull even. A kill from Dejah Behrend began an 8-2 run by SD Mines that gave them a six-point lead at 20-14. They would score the final three to win 25-18.

Set 3: SD Mines 28, Truman State 26

There were seven lead changes and 12 ties in the first half of the third set before an ace by Hannah Benes gave SD Mines a 17-16 lead. They scored five points in-a-row to lead by six before Truman rallied. Trailing 23-18, Brown had a kill followed by an ace from Ainsley Heise, following an attack error, Maura Ploesser and Crowder combined on a block to draw Truman to within one at 23-22. SD Mines reached match point but an error followed by another block from Benzing and Berry sent the set to extra points. SD Mines had a second match point but Berry scored to tie it at 25. A bad set from Hardrocker Kiley Metzger gave Truman their first set point but a service error thwarted the win. A pair of attack errors by Truman gave the Hardrockers the final two points and the match.

Truman State 0, Northern State 3

Northern State defeated Truman in three straight sets to round out the last game of Friday's doubleheader. The Bulldogs were unable to keep an early 4-point lead in set 1 and the Wolves clawed their way back to win. Set 2 and 3 were not favorable for Truman, as they only held a lead twice.

Hanna Berry and Ainsley Heise led the Bulldogs in kills with seven, and Emma Baierl had a team high 12 digs.

Set 1: Northern State 25, Truman State 22

A Hanna Berry kill gave Truman a 16-12 lead, but the Wolves managed to comeback and win a back-and-forth thriller 25-22. Truman led 21-18 before giving up 7 of the last 8 points of the set. Jessica Proszenyak and Hanna Berry both had three kills, and Lexi Arnel had five digs.

Set 2: Northern State 25, Truman State 16

After splitting the first four points, Truman was stuck trying to play catchup for the rest of the set. Truman's only lead of the set came from the first point by a kill from Jessica Proszenyak.

Set 3: Northern State 25, Truman State 15

The third set was tightly contested, having four lead changes early in the match before Northern State pulled a way to secure the match win. A service ace from Rachel DeFries gave Truman their last lead of the set. Ainsley Heise led the Bulldogs in kills with three.
