SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Truman Volleyball team came close but couldn't breakthrough in the final two matches of the Augustana (S.D.) Invite on Saturday. Truman lost in three sets to Minnesota State Moorhead then lost in five to the host Vikings in the finale.
Truman will be off next week as they open Great Lakes Valley Conference play at home on September 16
th against Drury University.
MSU-Moorhead 3, Truman State 0
Bridget Witzmann recorded 19 kills on 42 attempts as Minnesota State swept the Bulldogs in three straight to open day two of the Augustana Invite.
The Bulldogs were led with 11 kills by
Annabelle Crowder and seven each from
Ainsley Heise and
Hanna Berry.
Set 1: MSU Moorhead 25-18
Truman took a 14-10 lead on kills by Berry, two attack errors and a service ace from
Lexi Arnel but MSU Moorhead's Witzmann ended the run with a kill. Macie Wieman then served eight consecutive points to put the Dragons up 19-14.
Set 2: MSU Moorhead 25-22
Teams traded early points and again Truman took a slight lead at 14-10 on a kill by
Rachel DeFries, they were up 17-12 before the Dragons rattled off five straight points to tie the set. The Bulldogs reached 20 first on an error by MSU but a blocking error and kill from Tori Thompson pushed the opponents back on top 21-20. Knotted at 21, Keeya Doppler got the kill and MSU scored the next three points before taking the set 25-22.
Set 3: MSU Moorhead 25-22
Four straight points by the Dragons established a five-point lead at 10-5 and had Truman playing catchup most of the set. The 'Dogs got as close as two at 23-21 on a block by
Emma Baierl and Heise but Witzmann set up match point with a kill on the next serve.
Augustana 3, Truman State 2
Truman led 2-1 after three sets up an explosion of points for Augustana in set four forced a deciding fifth set. In the finale, the Bulldogs stayed off one match point to tie the set at 14 before Augustana pulled out a 16-14 victory.
Jessica Proszenyak led Truman hitters with 13 kills followed by
Hanna Berry with 12. Proszenyak added 18 digs for the double-double.
Monica Brown hit a team high .800 with four kills in five attacks.
Set 1: Augustana 25-18
The Vikings raced out of the gate with five straight points to open the match and never let the Bulldogs establish a run in a 25-18 win.
Set 2: Truman State 25-23.
Auggie led 15-11 and 19-14 before Truman strung together five of the next six points to close the gap. An ace by Heise tied the set and a kill from Proszenyak gave the Bulldogs their first lead. Another kill by Proszenyak broke the 22-all tie and a pair of kills from Berry tied the match at one set each.
Set 3: Truman State 25-20
The momentum was swinging Truman's way with five points to start the set, with four served by Proszenyak. Truman led 10-4, however Auggie went on a 6-0 run to tie the set. The Bulldogs responded by scoring seven of the next eight points and were up seven at 19-12. Auggie closed to within three at 23-20 until Proszenyak got the kill. Truman would take set three on an attack error.
Set 4: Augustana 25-12
The home team didn't like their backs against the wall as they used an eight-point rally to go from up 8-6 to 16-6 in the fourth set. They would force a fifth 25-12.
Set 5: Augustana 16-14
Truman bounced back with four quick points in the decider. A kill by Crowder made it 7-4. A pair of points scored by Maddy Guetter and an error by Truman pushed the Vikings in from 9-8. With the set tied at 11 a kill by Piper Asche and ace from Erika Bute moved Auggie up 13-11. Kate Reimann set up match point with a kill however Berry and an attack error from Reimann tied it at 14 each. Two Truman errors ended the match, one from the service line and another via a block by Guetter.
