KIRSKVILLE, Mo. - Truman State Men's basketball (11-13, 6-10 GLVC) plays Lewis (8-15, 3-12 GLVC) in Pershing Arena on Saturday, February 11, at 3 p.m. The Truman seniors will be celebrated as it will be their final game in Pershing Arena.
Against Lewis:
The Lewis Flyers out of Romeoville, Ill. are 8-15 overall and 3-12 in GLVC play in 2022-23. The Flyers non-conference wins came against Michigan Technical (71-67), Cedarville (69-65), Wayne State (79-66), Lake Superior State (74-53), and St. Francis (Ill.) (84-71). Their GLVC wins are Truman State on 12/1 (68-60), UMSL (82-64), and Maryville (81-59). Lewis is on a four-game losing streak.
Lewis is coached by Scott Trost who is in his 17th season with the Flyers. Trost is Lewis' all-time winningest men's basketball coach, and has brought them to great success. He has five 20+ win seasons, six NCAA Tournaments, and two GLVC titles (2016, and 2021).
Beau Frericks leads the Flyers in points per game with 15.7. Frericks plays 34 minutes a game and shoots 47% from the field and 40% from three. He is also an excellent free throw shooter, going 92% from the line.
Jamere Hill is second in scoring with 11.3 points per game and leads Lewis in assists per game with 3.1.
Devon Vanderheydt is nearly a double-digit scorer, putting up 9.9 a game. He leads the team with 5.4 boards per game.
Bulldog Tidbits:
Truman State secured a massive 87-74 win against UIS on Thursday, February 9th.
The Bulldogs found themselves in early trouble, down 20-7 with 9:39 left in the first half. Truman played their way back into the game and took a 39-35 lead at the end of the half. Truman shot 16-29 (55.2%) from the field and 5-11 (45.5%) from behind the arc. UIS shot good as well, going 13-24 (54.2%) and 7-16 (43.75%) from three.
The score was either tied or in Truman's favor the entire second half, with UIS playing catch-up for a majority of the contest. The Prairie Stars tied the game three different times in the second half of play, but were unable to take the lead from the Bulldogs. Truman's lead was threatened with 5:40 before Xavier Hall and Elijah Hazekamp hit two huge 3-pointers to all but ice the game. The Bulldogs shot an even 12-24 (50%) from the field and 4-7 (57.1%) in the second half. Truman made 22 of their 27 free throws which turned out to be key in the victory.
Elijah Hazekamp had a phenomenal game, scoring 29 points with eight rebounds. Hazekamp shot 9-14 from the field and connected on five of his seven 3-point attempts.Â
Hunter Strait and Trey Shearer each scored 14 points, with Shearer adding five rebounds and five assists to his name.
Dylan Peeters and Xavier Hall were Truman's other two double-digit scorers. Peeters had 11 on an efficient 4-5 shooting, and Hall reached 10 points. Peeters recorded 11 assists and a block as well.
Keaton Mitchell played in his first game since January 14th, scoring five points on 2-3 shooting.
The Bulldogs are now 11-13 on the year and 6-10 in GLVC play. The home win against UIS brought Truman to 6-6 at home this season.
Following Senior Day, Truman hits the road for a matchup with Quincy on Saturday, February 18th, at 3 p.m. Then the Bulldogs play their last two games of the regular season at Rockhurst and at William Jewell.
