KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Truman State softball split a doubleheader with future GLVC opponent Upper Iowa in their 2023 home opener. The Bulldogs took game one 9-1 in five innings, and Upper Iowa won game two 10-3.
Game One:
Upper Iowa scored first with a solo home run in the first inning, but the rest of the game was all Truman State.
The Bulldogs rattled off nine-straight runs between the first and fourth innings, including Alex Beard and Lauren Stade home runs.
Eight Bulldog hitters recorded hits, with Cassie Smith going 3-3 with two runs.
Emily Eberwine, Cameron Patterson, Alex Beard, and Breianna Klein each had two hits. Alex Beard had a game-high four RBI, Lauren Stade had two, and Breianna Klein had an RBI as well.
Annabel Zimmer threw all five innings, allowing one run and allowing only three hits.
Game Two:
The Bulldogs had a harder time with the Peacocks in the second game, losing 10-3 to close out the doubleheader.
McKenzie West drove Emily Eberwine in on a fielder's choice to go up 1-0 in the first before Upper Iowa scored eight unanswered to take an 8-1 lead.
West scored Eberwine again in the sixth on another fielder's choice to make it 8-2, and Upper Iowa tacked two more on in the seventh to make the score 10-2 Peacocks. Alex Beard hit a home run in the seventh for the Bulldogs' third run of the game.
McKenzie West and Alex Beard drove in the three runs scored. Cassie Smith, Emily Eberwine, Cameryn Patterson, and Alex Beard each had a hit.
Truman plays this Saturday and Sunday against Maryville and UMSL at home to open GLVC play.
