KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The 80
th edition of Homecoming on the Truman State campus will see the Bulldogs welcome McKendree (Ill.) University to Stokes Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Truman State will face one of the top passing teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as the Bulldogs look to extend their current four-game winning streak.
The Bulldogs have won five straight Homecoming games and seven of the last eight. McKendree was the Homecoming opponent in 2013, Truman State's first year in the GLVC and the Bulldogs pulled out a 28-21 victory to halt a two-game losing streak on Homecoming.
Truman State was able to fend off Quincy (Ill.) on Saturday 28-21 to pick up their fourth straight victory.
Kel Battle scored on a blocked punt and caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from
Dylan Hair and the defense held on to stuff the Hawks on their final drive attempting to tie the game.
McKendree threw for 400 yards as they pushed conference leader Indianapolis in a 42-34 loss at home on Saturday. Bearcat quarterback Ty Michael earned GLVC Offensive Player of the Week honors following the loss after competing 32-of-41 pass attempts for 400 yards and three touchdowns. Kendall Abdur-Rahman caught eight passes for 130 yards and Yogi Flager Jr. nabbed 10 for 90 as both are in the top five in the GLVC in receptions.
The Bulldogs have allowed a league-high 254 yards passing per game but have been solid against the run allowing 121 yards per contest, ranking third in the league.
It was a shootout last year in Lebanon, Illinois as Truman State picked up their sixth straight win over the Bearcats 56-24. It was the second consecutive game that the Bulldogs hung 50 or more points on McKendree and the fifth straight with 40 or more points scored.
Truman State had three interception returns for touchdowns in last year's win.
Thomas Spaulding ran one back from 19 yards out to make it 14-0 early then in the second half
Jake Closser had a 20-yard pick-six and
Ryan Olivas added a 67-yard return for touchdown as Truman scored 35 second-half points to pull away.
Last Time Out:
The Bulldogs had some dicey moments but took care of business in their 28-21 win at Quincy Saturday.
Jackson Overton scored his eighth receiving touchdown of the season to open the scoring in the second quarter. Overton has now cracked the single-season top 10 in receiving touchdowns and is three back of the single-season record.
Kel Battle recovered a blocked punt and returned it 33 yards for a 14-0 Bulldog lead but Quincy cut the margin in half with a 40-yard touchdown pass with 1:18 left in the second.
Truman got the score right back as
Dylan Hair and the offense swept down the field covering 65 yards in just three plays with
Joseph Spaulding nabbing a 33-yard pass from Hair just 32 seconds later.
Quincy capped off a 10-play, 80-yard drive to cut the lead back to seven late in the third quarter but Battle scored his second TD of the game and first receiving touchdown on a 45-yard strike from Hair early in the fourth to put the lead back up to 14.
Taking advantage of a roughing the passer foul on a fourth down, Quincy pulled back to within seven on a 17-yard pass play. They then forced a quick three and out to get the ball back at their own 30 with 2:23 to play. Two quick passes put the ball at midfield where the defense held firm and got the stop on fourth and six to end the game.
The Bulldogs finished with a season-low 60 yards rushing and 278 yards of total offense on the day. The defense, led by 10 tackles from
Brock Jones, posted a season-best nine tackles for loss.
McKendree led 7-0 at home to Indianapolis with Yogi Flager Jr. pulling in a 12-yard TD pass and the Bearcats were set to go up 10-7 in the second but a blocked field goal went 77 yards the other direction and the Greyhounds jump ahead 14-7.
It was 21-13 Indianapolis at the half but a pair of third-quarter touchdown runs pushed the lead out 35-13 UINDY. Flager would catch two more TD passes late in the game to finish with three on the contest with the last coming with 18 seconds showing in the fourth quarter.
McKendree totaled nearly 500 yards of total offense against UINDY while the Greyhounds put up 397 yards. The Bearcats knocked off Indianapolis in 2023 on the road 21-16.
