KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Following two dominating performances, the Truman State University Bulldog Football team will look to close out the regular season in style by hosting Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University for Senior Day at Stokes Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs outscored their previous two opponents 86-7 with a 52-7 win over Lincoln and a 34-0 shutout over William Jewell. They have accumulated nearly 900 yards of total offense the past two weeks while limiting both Jewell and Lincoln to 342 yards, roughly 3.2 yards per play.

Truman State sits in a tie for second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 5-2 record and could secure their spot in the America's Crossroads Bowl following a victory over Southwest Baptist and league-champion Indianapolis is selected for the NCAA Division II playoffs on Sunday. The Bulldogs are tied with Upper Iowa for that second place spot but hold the tie-breaker with the Peacocks with their 26-23 win back on October 5th in Fayette, Iowa. Upper Iowa will finish the regular season at home against Missouri S&T (3-4 GLVC).

Standing in the way will be Saturday's foe of Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats threw a wrench into the Bulldogs playoff hopes last year when All-American place kicker Logan Turner booted a 31-yard field goal on a soggy, rainy day in Bolivar to give SBU a 20-17 win.

The Bearcats led 17-10 heading into the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs tied the game on a 15-yard run by Nolan Hair with 3:45 remaining. SBU picked up 31 yards on their first two plays on the ensuing drive and then whittled the clock down to set up the winning field goal with no time left.

Truman State posted season-low with just 165 yards of total offense and were plagued by a pair of turnovers and just one third down conversion on the afternoon. SBU possessed the ball for over 35 minutes, recovered five of their seven fumbles and rushed for 242 yards.

The Bearcats were picked fifth in the GLVC coaches' poll in the preseason but have won just two of nine games and only one in the conference. They have dropped their last five contests, most recently a 34-25 defeat at home to Quincy (Ill.). Their lone league win was 17-13 over Lincoln back on September 28.

The last three games in the series between the two schools have all been decided by a touchdown or less. The Bulldogs won 25-20 in the Bearcats' last visit to Stokes Stadium in 2022 but lost 27-21 in Bolivar in 2021. That Bearcat win broke a five-game Truman State winning streak running from 2017. The two teams have played rather regularly since 1988 with Truman State holding a 29-6 advantage.

Last Time Out:
The Bulldogs posted their first shutout in 36 games and their 92nd all-time shutout with a 34-0 blanking of William Jewell on Saturday. Truman State allowed only two yards in the first 15 minutes of action and held the Cardinals to a season-low 136 yards of total offense on the day. Meanwhile, the Bulldog defense scored two touchdowns, a fumble recovery by Ulysses Ross and an interception by Markiese Jones while having two 100-yard rushers on the day.

Denim Cook scampered 66-yards for a touchdown and finished with 141 yards on only 12 carries and quarterback Dylan Hair gained a career-high 106 yards on the ground and scored on his own eight-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Elijah Stevens added another 65 yards on the ground and Truman State topped 300 yards rushing (310) for the first time this season.

Ross set a season-high with 10 tackles while recovering a fumble in the endzone for the Bulldogs first touchdown of the game late in the first quarter.  The TD was set up by a "coffin-corner" punt by Mason Gessert, who placed the ball at the Cardinals three yard line. Gessert had eight punts with a season-best 41.2 average, five inside the 20 and his longest of the year, 50 yards.

SBU battled Quincy for Senior Day in Bolivar on Saturday but fell 34-25 to drop their fifth straight game. The Bearcats led 19-17 at the half following touchdown runs by Jeremiah Horn (2-yards) and Jaquan Dorsey (1-yard) and a 70-yard pass from freshman quarterback Sal Caldarella to top receiver Jordan Kent.

Quincy picked up a pair of field goals and a pair of 1-yard TD runs by Teon Dollard to lead 34-19. Rickey Woodhouse picked up a fumble and rumbled 75-yards for the last Southwest Baptist touchdown midway through the fourth quarter but the Bearcats could not get any closer.

Caldarella was 12-of-25 for 204 yards and was the leading rusher with 45 yards on the ground. Quincy held the ball for over 38 minutes of game action.

Through 10 Games:

The Bulldog offense could see a few players reach some season benchmarks on Saturday. Running back Denim Cook is 35 yards shy of 1,000 for the season and would become the 16th Truman State running back to achieve 1,000 yards in a season on the ground. Cook has 10 rushing touchdowns and is averaging 5.7 yards per attempt while ranked fifth in the GLVC in yards per game at 96.5.

Dylan Hair is 42 passing yards away from 2,000 for the season. That mark has been hit just twice in the past 10 seasons, 2,228 yards by brother Nolan Hair in 2021 and 2,096 yards by Jaden Barr in 2019. With one more touchdown pass, he will top 20 for a season for only the third time by a Bulldog in the last 20 years. Nolan Hair had 20 in 2021 and Matt Ticich had 26 in 2007. Hair has rushed for over 500 yards this season (506).

Jackson Overton is currently second all-time in single-season receiving touchdowns with nine and the most by a Bulldog receiver since Kevin Collins in 2000. Overton is two shy of the school record of 11 held by Larry Tisdale and set in 1985.  His 584 yards is the most by a Bulldog since Drew Slager accumulated 625 in 2016.

The Bulldogs are averaging 188.5 yards rushing and 201 yards passing through 10 games. They are third in the league in scoring at 30.9 points per game and third in rushing and fifth in passing.

Brock Jones is the leading tackler on a defensive unit that surrenders 22.8 points per game with 328 yards of total defense. Jones has 60 stops with 4.5 for loss and two quarterback sacks. Jake McCollum is second with 47 tackles and Connor Baxley has moved up to third with 44. McCollum and Peyton Carr will be playing in their 47th career games as Bulldogs on Saturday. Carr is the active leader in tackles with 243.

Jake Closser has 10 career interceptions and will crack the Bulldog top 10 on his next pick. Closser is fifth all-time in interception return yards with 182. The Bulldogs have picked off seven passes this season.

Ulysses Ross is now tied for second all-time in tackles for loss with 42 during his 45 games played. Ross has 233 career tackles with 13 quarterback sacks.

Vinnie Calvaruso is 10-for-17 on field goals with a long of 42 and 35-of-37 on point-after attempts. He has averaged 55.4 yards on 60 kickoffs. Mason Gessert has punted 42 times for a 35.0 yards per punt average with a long of 50 and 14 inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

Jake Closser has averaged 19.1 on 14 punt returns including an 80-yard touchdown return. He now has enough attempts to qualify for NCAA rankings and is currently third in Division II in punt return yards. Closser was the GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week following week four.

With one game left on the regular season schedule, Head Coach Kellen Nesbitt is attempting to be the sixth Bulldog first-year coach to win at least seven games in their first season. Nesbitt is looking to join Don Faurot (7 in 1926), Fred Faurot (7 in 1935), Red Wade (7 in 1951), Ron Taylor (7 in 1975) and Eric Holm (9 in 1990).

Up Next:
The NCAA will announce their playoff field on Sunday afternoon and if as expected, the University of Indianapolis is selected to participate, the Bulldogs, with a win on Saturday, would be the GLVC representative at the America's Crossroads Bowl in Hobart, Indiana on Saturday, December 7.

They would play the highest ranked non-playoff team out of the Great Midwest Conference which currently could be either Ashland (Ohio), Tiffin (Ohio) or a rematch with Findlay (Ohio).  The bowl committee will announce the participants next week along with tickets and other festivities.
