KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Truman State Men's basketball look to continue their success with their final home games of the season against Illinois Springfield and Missouri S&T.
Last week, the Bulldogs extended their win streak to six games after an 81-75 win over Maryville and a 92-84 victory over Missouri S&T.
Against Maryville, The Bulldogs took a 23-7 lead with 10:56 left in the first-half, but the Maryville Saints fought back hard to cut the deficit. Maryville took their first lead of the game with 2:54 left in the half, going up 31-30. Truman State managed to go into the break up 37-34. Truman led the entirety of the second-half until the Maryville took the lead back with 6:11 left, going up 59-58. Matt Haefner made a layup to give the Bulldogs the lead and Trey Shearer hit two free throws up go up 62-59. Truman State extended their lead to nine with 1:30 left in the game, and the Bulldogs made their late-game free throws to take an 81-75 victory. Xavier Hall had a game and career-high 27 points on an incredibly efficient 11-13 shooting. Hall also had six rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Matt Haefner was a rebound away from a double-double, scoring 17 with nine rebounds. Haefner dished out three assists which was tied with Trey Shearer for the team-high. Shearer had 15 points on 5-8 shooting, adding three rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Kobi Williams was Truman's fourth double-digit scorer with 12. Williams also had three rebounds.
Against Missouri S&T, The Bulldogs kept the Miners at arm's length for the last 10 minutes of the first-half, going into the break up 45-37. Missouri S&T slowly chipped away at the Truman lead, tying the game 58-58 with 12:10 left in the game. The two teams kept kept trading scores, but the Bulldogs were able to fight off the S&T comeback for an eight-point win. Xavier Hall had his second straight 20+ scoring game, dropping a team-high 22 points on 9-15 shooting. Hall had an additional three rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Kobi Williams scored 19 points with five his scores coming from behind the arc. He also had two rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Brennan Lovette was right behind Williams in scoring with 17 on 6-8 shooting. Lovette tallied six rebounds and five assists. Trey Shearer also had double-digit points, scoring 13. Shearer had a team-high six assists along with three rebounds. Landon Eiland had eight points and seven rebounds which led the team. Casen Lawrence scored six points, Matt Haefner had five, and CE Talton had two. Joe Knutson had two rebounds and a steal.
Illinois Springfield is 16-11 overall, and 9-8 in the GLVC. The Prairie Stars are on a four-game losing streak and are 4-4 on the road. Their losses in the losing streak were to UMSL (64-62), McKendree (121-116), Lewis (86-74), and UINDY (82-75). In their loss to UINDY, Jacob Hanan scored 24 points and had a team-high nine rebounds.
Jacob Hanna, Rice Jordan, Jack Weber, and Max Kunnert all average double-digit points. Jacob Hanna and Jordan Rice are at the top, with Hanna at 14.9 and Rice at 14.7. Jack Weber averages 12.1 and Max Kunnert puts up 12.0.
Weber has a team-high .555 FG% while taking the 265 shots. Rice is second at .502 on 289 shots which is most on the team. Kunnert has taken the most 3-pointers (155), but has the best percentage at .471.Â
Jacob Hanna is first on the team and second in the GLVC in rebounds per game with 7.4.
Jordan Rice averages 4.9 assists per game, just behind Xavier Hall's 5.0. Rice is third in the GLVC in assists and Hall is second.
Jacob Hanna and Jordan Rice both averages 1.4 steals per game, which is tied for ninth in the conference.
The Quincy Hawks are 11-14 overall and 6-11 in conference play. The Hawks won their last game and are 2-7 in away games. Their last game was an 82-69 win against Lewis in Quincy, where Zion Richardson scored 25 points with six assists.
Zion Richardson is fifth in scoring in the conference, averaging 17.3 points per game. Isaiah Foster averages 11.7 a game.
Richardson also has has the best shooting percentage at .425 in 322 attempts. He averages 13.4 attempts per game, and Isaiah Foster shoots 10.2 times per game.Â
Richardson's 6.9 rebounds per game is best on the team and ranks him sixth in the GLVC.
Nate Shockey leads the team in assists per game at 2.5 and steals at 1.7, and John Kelly III blocks 0.6 shots a game.
Xavier Hall won Truman's first Player of the Week award since Elijah Hazekamp on 1/23/23. Against Maryville, had a career-high 27 points on 11-13 shooting. Xavier also had six rebounds, two assists, three steals and no turnovers against the Saints. In Truman's win against Missouri S&T, their sixth win in a row, Hall had another great game. Xavier scored 22 points on 9-15 shooting. He also added three rebounds, three assists, and a steal against the Miners.
In Truman's home finale against Quincy, CE Talton will be honored during the senior day ceremony. Talton, a true senior who began his collegiate career at Olney Central College, transferred to Truman State where he has had a successful two years. In his two seasons, he has scored 175 total points for a 5.2 average. He had a career-high 18 points against Pittsburg State on 12/18/23.
