KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman State Softball team and Quincy Hawks split their Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Kirksville. QU took the opener 2-0 while the Bulldogs grabbed game two by a 4-3 score. Truman will be back in action on Sunday hosting Illinois Springfield at 1 p.m.
Quincy took a 1-0 lead on a double by Maddy Findley in the third inning. They would add an insurance run in the seventh with two outs when Allyson Maynard punched a ball up the middle to plate Allison Kaiser.
The Bulldogs were without a hit until Emily Wood and Cassie Smith each bunted on in bottom of the sixth but were left stranded. Caragan Baker hit a one-out single in the seventh and advanced to third on a hit by Madi McCarty with two outs. Unfortunately, pinch hitter Sofia Birkenholz was the ninth strikeout victim by pitcher Abby Hultz.Â
Wood drove in all four runs and was 3-for-3 at the dish while Kaylyn Jones and Brianna Klein kept Quincy off balance in a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
Wood cleared the bases in the second after Quincy had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the inning when she belted a ball to the fence in right field to score Abbie Danchus, Sofia Birkenholtz and Ryleigh Jones.Â
Quincy tied the game at three in the fourth with a two-out double by Jessie Martin. The Bulldogs got the lead back in their half of the inning with Birekenholz leading off with a single, moving up on a bunt by Jones and scoring on Wood's grounder up the middle into centerfield.Â
The Hawks had the tying run at third base in the sixth but Birkenholtz made a nifty stop on a tough grounder for the second out of the inning and Brooke Nutter corralled a roller to first to end the threat.Â
In the seventh, Quincy got a two-out single from Kaiser but Nutter snared a line drive at first off the bat of Maynard to end the game.Â
Jones worked the first five innings with two strikeouts for the win and Klein closed the door in the final two innings for the save.Â
