Softball Secures Tournament Spot With Sweep Over Missouri S&T

ROLLA, Mo. - Cassie Smith drove in three runs, all at crucial times, as the Truman State Softball team swept Missouri S&T by scores of 2-1 and 7-1 to earn a berth into the Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason tournament next weekend.

It will be the first appearance by the Bulldogs in the GLVC Tournament in five seasons as they will find out their seed and first-round opponent for the double-elimination bracket later tonight. The tournament is scheduled to begin on May 2nd at the Eastside Center in East Peoria, Illinois.

Smith's two-out, two-run single gave the Bulldogs the lead in a 2-1 victory in game one. Brieanna Klein singled and Madi McCarty pinch ran with one out. McCarty swiped second and Abbie Danchus drew a walk. A critical error by the third baseman allowed the bases to be full.

The second out was made on a foul out to first but Smith came up clutch with a drive down the left field line scoring McCarty and pinch runner Ryleigh Jones to the lead.

The Miners had runners on base in the last three innings but could not push across the tying run.

Maddie Anderson tossed the first five innings and allowed just one run on three hits and Kaylyn Jones pitched the final two for the save with no hits allowed.

Nina Fenasci's squeeze play bunt scored Cameryn Patterson in the second inning of game two and Smith's double plated Jones to start a four-run, fifth inning for the Bulldogs. Cali Coombs knocked a two-run single and later scored to make it 5-0 Bulldogs on a ground out off the bat of Charlotte Chelich.

The Miners got a run back in the bottom of the inning but Emily Wood sealed the victory with a two-run triple in the sixth.

Jones, Chelich and Anderson all tossed innings in the second game with Chelich getting the win.

The Bulldogs finish the regular season 23-27 and 13-13 in the GLVC. They should be seeded sixth based on having the same records at Missouri S&T and Maryville and sweeping both of them this weekend. That would most likely set up a first round game against #3 Drury (29-22/17-9 GLVC). The Panthers edged out the Bulldogs by scores of 3-1 and 1-0 back on March 30.
