EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The #3 seeded Drury Panthers downed the #6 seed Truman State Softball team 8-0 in an opening round game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference softball tournament on Friday morning.
The game was halted scoreless in the top of the second inning as a weather system moved through the area and forced teams to leave the field. The Bulldogs had put the first two runners on base in that first inning with
Cassie Smith singling and stealing second and
Cali Coombs driving a ball up the middle and advancing to second. However, ground balls back to the pitcher and a strikeout ended the threat.
Play resumed on Friday morning and after another scoreless inning, Drury broke through with a one-out double to score the game's first run. Things unraveled with a hit by pitch to load the bases, a bases loaded walk and run scoring singles to score five in the inning.
The Panthers added one more in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Coombs and
Caragan Baker each collected two hits.
The Bulldogs and Lewis Flyers will play in an elimination game later on Friday.
