KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman Softball team earned a 1-0 shutout win in the opener but a costly sixth inning in the nightcap allowed the Rockhurst Hawks to split their Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday by a 4-1 score.
Game one was scoreless through three when Charlotte Chelich drew a leadoff walk to start the fourth. She moved up on a sac bunt and Abbie Manchus drew a two-out bases on balls. Pinch runner Ryleigh Jones baited the Rockhurst catcher into a pickoff attempt at first and the ball scooted into right field allowing Chelich to plate the only run in the game.Â
Maddie Anderson worked the first four innings, scattering three hits while Kaylyn Jones struck out four in the final three frames to pick up the save. Rockhurst had the tying run on third in the sixth but Jones tipped a comebacker that deflected to Lily Arndt at second to record the final out of the inning.
The Bulldogs took advantage of another throwing error in game two to go up 1-0 in the second. Cali Coombs doubled to lead off and then moved to third on a grounder by Madi McCarty. The Hawks looked to throw across the diamond back to get Coombs but the ball sailed out of play and Coombs was awarded home.
Anderson tossed the first three innings, allowing only two hits and striking out four. Chelich came in and fanned four but a hit batter in the sixth followed by a walk chased her from the circle. Kaylyn Jones returned to pitch and the first hitter Maya Gallagher lifted a high fly to right that the wind drifted the ball away from the fielder allowing both runners to score on the triple. A passed ball, a double and a single scored two more insurance runs for the Hawks.
The Bulldogs mustered only two hits in the second game and left five on base.
Truman State will host William Jewell at noon on Sunday.Â
