KIRKSVILLE, Mo. The Bulldog Softball team's offensive production ramped up on Sunday with 14 runs and 21 hits in a 9-4 and 5-1 doubleheader sweep over William Jewell. Emily Wood, Charlotte Chelich and Cali Coombs each belted home runs in the games.
Maddie Anderson wiggled out of a two-on, no out jam in the second inning with strikeouts of the final two hitters and the Bulldogs took advantage of a wild pitch to go up 1-0 in the opener.Â
The Cardinals grabbed the lead in the third on a double but that is when the offense clicked. Six hits aided by three errors in the next two innings put the Bulldogs up comfortably 8-2. Chelich delivered a knockout with her second home run of the season in the fourth.Â
Call Coombs added to the lead with her first home run in the sixth to make it 9-2. Jewell would push across two runs in the seventh but could not get the tying run to the plate.Â
Kaylyn Jones was the winner in relief of Anderson, pitching the final four and a third innings with five strikeouts.Â
Emily Wood blasted her seventh home run in the first inning and Caragan Baker knocked a double to stake Truman out 3-0 in game two. Wood and Madi McCarty would both cross the plate in the second to make it 5-0 Bulldogs.
Chelich faced the minimum the first time through the Cardinal lineup then a pair of doubles in the fourth allowed William Jewell to push across their only run. Chelich would go five innings before giving way to Brieanna Klein for the final two frames in the win.Â
Cassie Smith had four hits on the day with three stolen bases.
The Bulldogs improve to 9-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will face a road trip to the St. Louis metro area next weekend with doubleheaders against Missouri-St. Louis and McKendree (Ill.). The nine conference wins already surpasses GLVC victories in each of the last two seasons.Â
