KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – An early season showdown with #16 University of Indianapolis is on tap this Saturday for the Truman State Bulldog Football team. The Greyhounds have been the standard bearer for the Great Lakes Valley Conference, winning nine of the 12 contested league titles since 2012.

The Bulldogs have been bridesmaids to the Greyhounds in five of those championship years and have only been able to claim a victory over UINDY once, back in 2016.  Last year in Kirksville, an 82-yard blocked field goal returned for a touchdown became the pivotal play that hoisted the Greyhounds to a 38-17 victory.  With the score tied at 14 apiece, the Bulldogs picked off Gavin Sukup at the UINDY 34-yard line. After failing to convert on third and seven from the UINDY 18, the Bulldogs attempted a 36-yard field goal with just under six minutes left in the half. Aaron Barnett blocked the kick and Landry Mavungu raced 82 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

UINDY would tack on 10 more points in the third quarter and held the Bulldogs to just one field goal the rest of the way. The Bulldogs outgained the Greyhounds 379 to 313 but UINDY capitalized on all four redzone scoring chances while Truman was only three for seven inside the Greyhounds 20.
Denim Cook pounded out 130 yards rushing for TSU while Sukup completed 20-of-30 for 212 and three touchdown passes for UINDY. It was the Greyhounds seventh straight win over the Bulldogs and 10th out of 11 games played in the series.

Last Time Out:
The 2024 Bulldogs got off to an inauspicious start on Saturday as they allowed Findlay (Ohio) to score touchdowns on the Oilers' first three possessions before settling in and falling 37-21.

Findlay racked up 212 on their first possessions with each resulting in a touchdown. Jackson Overton caught a four-yard pass from Hair just before the half to cut the lead to 21-7. The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with the ball and marched 50 yards down the field but a strip following a completed pass saw Findlay's Joel Kpassou score on a 79-yard fumble return to restore the 21-point advantage.

Denim Cook scampered in on a 32-yard rushing score to cut the lead in half and following a field goal by Findlay, Hair went off tackle for a four-yard TD to make it a 10-point game with 5:54 to play.

The Bulldogs did force a punt but Findlay was able to bleed over three minutes off the clock in the process. The Oilers scored a late touchdown after the Bulldogs had turned the ball over on downs at their own 20.

Hair made his first start at quarterback, taking over for his older brother Nolan Hair. Dylan completed 19 of 41 passing attempts for 191 yards and also gained 80 yards on the ground on 13 rushes. His top target was redshirt freshman Overton, who was targeted 16 times, making six catches for 52 yards and a score.

Cook saw the bulk of the carries in the backfield with 16 for 82 yards on the ground.

Defensively, Brock Jones led the unit with eight tackles, including a sack while SJ Johnson, Jake McCollum, and Tyler Shanks totaled six tackles each.

Ten Bulldogs made their collegiate debuts on Saturday, including Overton while Elijah Stevens, Logan Montoya, Tucker McDowell, and Nick Closser, were true freshmen to step on the field.
Gavin Sukup threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns as UINDY downed Hillsdale (Mich.) 42-16 in their opener on the road. The Greyhounds raced out to their own 21-0 lead but saw the Chargers creep closer at 28-16 following an early fourth-quarter touchdown. UINDY added touchdowns later in the quarter to put the game out of reach.

The UINDY defense held Hillsdale to only 24 net rushing yards aided by four quarterback sacks. The Greyounds outgained the Chargers 478 to 284 on the night.

Up Next:
The Bulldogs will make another trip northeast when they travel to University City, Michigan to square off against Saginaw Valley State. This will be the third time in seven years that the schools have met with each defending their own turf. The Cardinals scored late to win 21-20 at home in 2018 while last year in Kirksville, the Bulldogs scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away for a 21-7 win in a defensive battle. Kickoff from Michigan is slated for 2 p.m. eastern time.
