SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - The Truman State Softball team became night owls as they played late into the night but picked up a pair of wins against Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday. The Bulldogs won game one 6-0 and game two 6-3 and will have a quick turnaround on Sunday with a doubleheader against St. Cloud State around 2 p.m.
Kaylyn Jones and Charlotte Chelich combined on a five-hit shutout in the first game. Jones went four innings and struck out three while Chelich pitched one-hit ball the final three to earn the save.
Chelich started the scoring with an RBI double in the second and Emily Wood knocked a two-run triple in a three-run third inning. The Bulldogs added single runs in each of the fourth and fifth frames.
The Bulldogs spotted the Mustangs with a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth then a Madi McCarty triple tied the game. Kyleia Salyars delivered an RBI single to put Truman ahead in the sixth and McCarty followed with a second three-bagger to make it 6-3. McCarty was 3-for-3 with four RBIs in the game.
Avaree Taylor came in of relief of starter Chelich and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing no runs on two hits to earn the win.
