FAYETTE, Iowa – After combining for ten home runs in two games, Truman State and Upper Iowa split a GLVC baseball doubleheader Friday, 15-5 and 16-15.
Redshirt freshman
Charlie Berry, batting with two down in the top of the ninth, hit his second home run of the day to allow the Bulldogs to take the final lead change in a wild Game 2. Sophomore third baseman
Dakota Joggerst knocked two home runs and two doubles in a day where he went 7-9 with six runs scored and nine RBI in the two games. Freshman
Owen Browning also had a perfect day at the plate in Game 2 going 5-5 with a double, run scored, and two RBI.
Truman State collected 20 hits in the second game scoring a season-high 16 runs in the victory. Freshman
Danny Tovar worked two and a third in relief to even his record at 2-2 on the season.
The Bulldogs started Game 1 with a 2-0 lead off Joggerst's first home run of the day with third-inning
Rawlins Brant homer giving Truman State a 3-1 lead after two and a half. The bottom of the third saw Upper Iowa score nine runs sending fourteen men to the plate knocking two home runs, a triple, two doubles, a single and three walks.
Truman State narrowed the gap to 10-4 in the fifth on
Charlie Berry's first home run of the season, but the Peacocks came right back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. Sophomore
Reed Drabant started the Bulldog seventh with a single and later scored on a Joggerst single. Three Peacock singles and a walk in the seventh ended things 15-5 in favor of Upper Iowa.
Freshman
Danny Lindsey took the loss in two and a third innings of work surrendering eight runs, six of which were earned. Peacock hitters tagged five Truman State hurlers for 15 hits and eight walks.
Upper Iowa got out to the quick start in Game 2 scoring two runs in both the first and second innings. Truman State responded in the third inning batting around to tie the score at four all with Joggerst and junior
Tyler Tieman each collecting RBI on a single and sacrifice fly, respectively. Senior
Luke Roussel scored Joggerst on an RBI single with Browning crossing the plate on a wild pitch, but the Peacocks got a run to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom half of the inning.
Brant led off the fourth with a walk and scored on a single by sophomore
Oliver Degenhardt who would score on Joggerst's second home run of the day. The 7-5 Bulldog lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth when Upper Iowa designated hitter Gunnar Wicklund hit his second home run of the game – and third of the day – followed by RBI on a single and a double for Upper Iowa to take back the lead, 8-7.
Truman State finished the fifth with a 9-8 lead off RBI doubles by Joggerst and Browning then a five-run sixth gave the 'Dogs a 14-9. Wicklund led off the bottom of the sixth with his third home run of the game with the Peacocks plating six runs to fight back to a 14-14 tie going into the seventh.
Brant opened the eighth with a walk and advanced to second on an error on a pickoff attempt, but a Degenhardt comebacker to the pitcher hung up Brant between second and third and Degenhardt thrown out on the double play. Joggerst hit his second double of the game and scored on a Tieman RBI single for Truman State to take a 15-14 advantage. An Upper Iowa sacrifice fly tied things at 15 after eight but the Berry home run followed by the Peacocks stranding the tying run at third gave Truman State the win.
The Bulldogs finished the day 4-13 overall, 1-1 GLVC, while Upper Iowa goes to 5-11, 2-4 GLVC. The two square off in a Saturday doubleheader in Fayette at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
