KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Lewis (Ill.) Flyers cooled off the Truman State bats on Monday, taking both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader by scores of 9-1 and 4-3. The Bulldogs will next be in action on Sunday against Quincy (Ill.) on the road.
Game one saw the Flyers break open a 2-1 game through four innings by putting up a six-run fifth frame. The Flyers sent 10 hitters to the plate in the fifth and took an 8-1 lead. They added a solo home run in the sixth to close things out.
The second game started with Lewis leading 4-0 after three innings, but things tightened up towards the end. Maddie Hickman led off the sixth with a solo home run, and Taylor followed with a double. She scored on a triple by Lydia Feiste, who was then awarded home plate following an obstruction call on the play, making it 4-3.
After the Bulldogs worked around a leadoff error in the top of the seventh, and then were down to their last out in the bottom. Cassie Smith doubled to left field, representing the tying run. She moved up on a wild pitch as Hickman drew a walk. Emily Wood stepped in and fought off several pitches before swinging through one to end the game. It marked the 17th strikeout by the Bulldogs on the afternoon.
