QUINCY, Ill. – Truman State Softball climbed to .500 in GLVC action by sweeping Quincy (Ill.) Sunday.
Game 1 saw the Bulldogs win 5-1 behind seven innings of five-hit ball from
Kaylyn Jones who walked one against seven strikeouts.
Cassie Smith, 3-4 at the plate, hit a double to lead off the game while knocking her first home run of the season in the third to stake Jones to a 1-0 lead.
Nina Fenasci scored
Avaree Taylor on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, 2-0 Bulldogs, and recorded a second sac fly in the sixth scoring
Caragan Baker, 3-0 Bulldogs. A wild pitch to walk
Kyleia Salyars allowed
Lydia Feiste to cross the plate, and an
Emily Wood sacrifice fly allowed Smith to score her second run of the day.
Game 2 starter
Charlotte Chelich left with an out in the third trailing 1-0 having surrendered a second-inning, lead-off home run. Working 4.2 innings of relief, Feiste allowed two Hawk runs in the bottom of the sixth but held on for the 6-3 victory.
Wood started the Truman State fourth with a hit and scored when Baker singled and advanced to third.
Maddie Hickman plated
Madi McCarty in the fifth giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead they held until scoring in the sixth started when Feiste knocked a two-run triple then later scored on a Salyars sacrifice fly. Hickman knocked in McCarty again for a 6-1 Truman State advantage after six. The Hawk half of the frame started with a lead-off walk that scored on a two-run home run to narrow the gap to 6-3, but the seventh-inning Hawk rally fell short with the bases loaded and winning run at the plate.
The Bulldogs go to 17-16 overall, 5-5 GLVC, while Quincy finishes the day 5-23, 1-9 GLVC. Next weekend sees Truman State continue its road trip at Rockhurst (Mo.) in Kansas City March 29 and at William Jewell (Mo.) in Liberty, Mo., March 30.
