Bulldog can’t force extras to stave off William Jewell sweep

LIBERTY, Mo. – Truman State Baseball lost a pair at William Jewell (Mo.) Saturday, 13-3 and 6-5.

Two runs in the Bulldog half of the seventh in Game 2 evened the score at 5-5, but the Cardinals walked it off with a one-out home run to complete the sweep. Truman State pitching surrendered six round trippers to Wiliam Jewell hitters Saturday including three to Jordan Phillips who has tagged the 'Dogs for four total homers through three games.

Game 1 saw the Bulldogs score runs in the second through fifth only to see William Jewell respond in their half of each inning to pull away. Alex Wittenauer recorded three RBI on a double and his first home run of the season in a 4-2 day at the dish. Rawlins Brant and Luke Roussel each had a double with Oliver Degenhardt, Tyler Tieman, and Brant accounting for the other three RBI in the loss.

Issac Epp worked four innings for the 'Dogs surrendering eight runs on 10 hits while walking only one. The junior southpaw falls to 0-4 on the season.

Game 2 saw the trend of playing from behind continue for Truman State when two Cardinal doubles plated four runs total in the first. The score remained 4-0 William Jewell until Roussel led off the fifth with a single and worked his way to third on a Reed Drabant walk and sac bunt by Charlie Berry. Roussel scored on a wild pitch, moving Drabant to third, who then scored on a Brant sac bunt. Degenhardt finished scoring in the inning with his first home run of the campaign to get the 'Dogs to 4-3, but as with Game 1, the Cardinal responded in their half to extend the lead to 5-3.

Roussel joined Wittenauer and Degenhardt by leading off the top of the seventh with his first round tripper in 2025 narrowing the gap to one run, 5-4. A Cardinal error allowed Drabant to reach and eventually score on another Berry sac bunt and RBI single by Brant. The 5-5 tie ended in the seventh with the third home run from Phillips to walk off the Bulldogs, 6-5.

Nick Phillips worked six innings giving up five runs on seven hits, three walks, and two strike outs. Kyle Stratman worked the seventh getting one out before the Cardinal home run.

Truman State finishes the day 4-18 overall, 1-6 GLVC, while William Jewell climbs to 11-12 overall, 4-7 GLVC. The four-game set ends tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
