INDIANAPOLIS – Game 1 of the weekend series between Truman State and Indianapolis went to the Greyhounds, 15-5, in seven innings.
The Bulldog pitching staff issued 16 total free passes – ten via base on balls and six hit batsmen – while Indianapolis ran wild for nine stolen bases. Tre Hondas swiped a game-high four bases to add to the Greyhounds' league-leading 81 steals on the season.
Danny Lindsey started for Truman State surrendering five runs, all earned, while giving up six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three innings. Indianapolis was the beneficiary of seven walks and four hit by pitches from
Noah Frailey working two innings in relief.
The Bulldogs got things going at the plate, down 5-0, in the top of the fourth.
Oliver Degenhardt reached on a one-out single and advanced to third on a
Gavin Schieffer double to left.
Quinten Bauman followed with a hit by a pitch to load the bases before
Tommy Krock knocked a double to score Degenhardt and Schieffer to narrow the lead to 5-2.
The bottom half of the fourth saw the wheels come off for the 'Dogs when UIndy sent 11 batters to the plate. A wild pitch scored the first run, a single score two, then three consecutive walks followed by hit by pitch allowed the Greyhounds to tally five in the frame.
Degenhardt and Krock each went 2-3 at the dish while Schieffer led the squad in runs scored with two. Krock recorded team-high three RBI with Colin Meuth collecting his first RBI since Feb. 8 at Pittsburg State (Kan.) on a 1-3 day hitting.
Truman State finishes the day 8-24 overall, 5-12 GLVC, with the Greyhounds going to 17-15, 10-6 GLVC. The two are back at it Saturday with a pair of seven-inning games scheduled for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. (ET).
